JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Truman State Softball team shook off a tough game one loss to earn a conference split with Lincoln (Mo.) University on Saturday. The Blue Tigers walked off game one 2-1, but Emily Wood notched three RBIs on three extra-base hits to power the Bulldogs to a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Truman State will head to Missouri S&T for a doubleheader on Sunday.
It was an utter heartbreaker in the opener, as pitcher Kayln Jones faced the minimum number of batters and allowed no hits through the first six innings before the Blue Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win 2-1.
Jones hit a batter in the second but got a ground ball double play to end the inning on the next at-bat.
Cassie Smith tripled with one out in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Nina Fenasci to make it 1-0 Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs failed to extend their lead when they left a pair of runners on in the fourth and single runners in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
A leadoff single broke up the no-hitter to start the bottom of the seventh, and the base runner was moved up on a sacrifice bunt. A groundout to third was the second out of the inning, but a single up the middle scored the tying run and allowed the winning run to move into scoring position. A pinch hitter singled to center field to give the Blue Tigers the victory.
Smith singled to start the second game and scored on the first of three extra-base hits by Emily Wood. She crossed the plate after Avaree Taylor got into a rundown.
Lincoln got a run back in their half of the first, but a triple by Wood, scoring Madi McCarty, pushed the lead to 3-1. An error allowed the Blue Tigers to plate a run in their half of the third.
In the fifth, a bunt single by Smith, followed by a wild pitch, put her in position to score on Wood's double, making it 4-2.
The Blue Tigers scratched out a run to creep closer in the bottom of the sixth, but Lydia Feiste worked around a two-out walk to strike out the final batter and pick up the win.
Wood and Smith each collected a trio of hits in the second game.
