KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – William Jewell overcame an early deficit to defeat Truman State 91-79 Wednesday night at Pershing Arena. The Cardinals improved to 13-7 overall and 9-3 in conference play, while the Bulldogs fell to 8-11 (5-6).
Truman State came out firing in the first half, with Julian Brown leading the early charge. The Bulldogs established their first lead at 9-7 when Marquis Carver-Smith hit a three-pointer at 17:19, assisted by Ja'Vion Byers. Later on, Truman tied it at 16-16 on a Kingery step-back jumper at 14:07, while the game remained tight throughout the opening period.
Brown continued his hot shooting, connecting on another three-pointer at 6:55 to cut the William Jewell lead to 34-28. Jahki Parrinello then stole the ball and converted a fast-break jumper at 6:31 to bring Truman within four at 34-30. Brown hit yet another three-pointer at 5:44, this one assisted by Drew Kingery, to make it 34-33. The Bulldogs seized their largest lead of the game at 5:00 when Parrinello converted a driving layup to put Truman ahead 38-34.
However, William Jewell responded quickly. The Cardinals closed the first half on a 14-3 run, with Sutton scoring on a fast-break driving layup at 1:17 to push the lead to 48-41. Kingery's two free throws with seven seconds left trimmed the halftime deficit to 48-43.
The Cardinals opened on a 7-1 run, with Isaac Patterson hitting a three-pointer at 16:52 to extend the lead to 55-44. Patterson connected again from beyond the arc at 15:34, assisted by William Beck, pushing the advantage to 60-48.
Despite Truman State's efforts to rally, led by Emmanuel Byrd's interior presence, the Cardinals maintained control. Byrd scored on consecutive possessions, including a driving layup at 16:02 and another layup at 15:17, but William Jewell answered each time. Kyle Scharbrough connected on back-to-back three-pointers at 14:50 and 13:26 to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
Brown finished with a game-high 21 points, adding five points after his 16-point first-half performance. Byrd provided consistent offense with 15 points, while Parrinello added 14 of his own.
