Bulldogs Open Season 2-4 in Alvy Memorial Classic

Bentonville, Ark. - The Truman State softball team opened the 2026 season with a challenging six-game weekend at the Alvy Memorial Classic, finishing 2-4 while showing offensive consistency and resilience against strong regional competition. Using a veteran-heavy lineup that includes standouts like Cassie Smith, Emily Wood, Cali Coombs, Brooke Nutter, and Jayda Long, the Bulldogs earned wins over East Central University and St. Mary's (TX) while competing closely in several other contests.

Truman State opened tournament play Friday with a narrow 4-3 loss to the University of Arkansas at Monticello despite holding a 9-8 advantage in hits. Cali Coombs put the Bulldogs on the board with a third-inning double, and Truman briefly took control in the fourth behind a sacrifice bunt from Brooke Nutter and an RBI single from Cassie Smith. Arkansas at Monticello answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win. Madison Kluever made the start in the circle, allowing four runs (two earned) over 3.2 innings, while the defense turned two double plays.

The Bulldogs responded later Friday with a 5-3 win over East Central. Truman State struck early with first-inning runs on a Cali Coombs fielder's choice and a Katie Pilcher RBI double. The lead grew in the third after a Madison Kluever double and a dropped third strike produced two more runs. Jayda Long earned the win with four innings of two-run work, while Brooke Nutter recorded the save. Cassie Smith led the offense with two hits, and the defense was flawless, turning three double plays without committing an error, including strong defensive work from Maddie Hickman.

Saturday began with a 6-1 loss to Emporia State. Truman State held the game scoreless into the sixth behind a strong start from Jayda Long, who threw 5.1 shutout innings before Emporia State broke through late. Emily Wood collected two hits for the Bulldogs, and Avaree Taylor drove in Truman State's lone run.

In the second game Saturday, Northwest Missouri State used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away for a 10-2 victory. Truman State scored first on an Emily Wood RBI groundout in the first inning and added a solo home run from Katie Pilcher in the second. Cassie Smith recorded two hits from the leadoff spot, while Wood and Pilcher each drove in a run.

Sunday opened with a tough 7-5 loss to Washburn after Truman State built an early four-run lead. Cassie Smith powered the offense with four RBIs and two hits, while Emily Wood added three hits and Kyleia Salyars contributed two. Washburn rallied with five runs in the sixth inning, including a three-run home run, to complete the comeback. Lydia Feiste made the start in the circle for Truman State.

The Bulldogs closed the weekend with a strong 6-2 win over St. Mary's (TX). Truman State used situational hitting to build the lead, including sacrifice flies from Emily Wood and Katie Pilcher and an RBI single from Jayda Long. Brooke Nutter added a solo home run, while Long earned the win with four solid innings in the circle. Madison Kluever secured the victory with three scoreless innings in relief. Pilcher led the team with two RBIs, Smith added two hits, and the Bulldogs showed aggressiveness on the bases with three stolen bases.

Throughout the weekend, Truman State received strong offensive production from Cassie Smith, Emily Wood, Katie Pilcher, and Cali Coombs, while Brooke Nutter added power and clutch situational hitting. In the circle, Jayda Long and Madison Kluever delivered several key outings against quality competition, supported by additional pitching from Lydia Feiste. Defensively, the Bulldogs showed strong fundamentals in key moments, highlighted by multiple double-play performances and error-free defense in the win over East Central.
