(TOPEKA, Kan.) – The No. 11 Truman volleyball team fell in four sets at No. 2 Washburn on Friday night, as the Lady Blues won 3-1 (-17, -19, 21-25, -20) to pick up a season split with the Bulldogs.
The two squads played to a 9-9 tie early in the first set before a 9-2 run helped Washburn pull away and cruise to a 25-17 opening frame win.
After trailing 2-1 at the outset of the second game, Truman (20-4, 9-3 MIAA) re-took the lead and held the advantage until a quick 3-0 Washburn run midway through put Washburn ahead, 16-15, and forced a Bulldog timeout. But the Lady Blues (22-2, 10-2 MIAA) scored three of the next four out the timeout and carried the momentum to a 2-0 lead in the match following a 25-19 decision.
Through the first two sets, Truman hit just .031 and had committed 22 attack errors, while Washburn connected at a .239 clip with just seven attack errors.
The third set was all about each team piecing together rallies, as Washburn came out of the intermission with a 6-1 blitz before the Bulldogs stormed back, taking 15 of the next 19 points to take a 16-10 lead. But the Lady Blues responded, scoring five straight to cut the lead to one, before Truman recovered to close the set by scoring nine of the final 15 points – getting back in the match with a 25-21 set win.
But the Bulldog third set momentum couldn't carry through to the fourth frame, as WU jumped out to a 10-2 lead and rode the margin to a match victory and a 25-20 fourth set win.
Junior Molly Sinclair led the Bulldogs with ten kills, and senior Allison Barker added nine kills and 23 digs. Senior Ashley Petak added a double-double with 19 assists and 15 digs, and senior libero Casey Bruno had a team-high and season-high 30 digs.
The Bulldogs hit .055 for the match and were able to hold WU to just a .169 percentage of their own.
Truman wraps up this two-match road trip at Fort Hays State on Saturday (Oct. 23) evening at 7 pm.
