(KIRKSVILLE, Mo.) – A pesky Newman squad hung around with the No. 14 Truman men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, but the Bulldogs rode a pair of first-half goals to a 3-2 Senior Day victory.
Truman (8-2-1) jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage, getting goals from senior Bobby Larkin (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway) in the 8th minute and senior Matt Kimball (Kirkwood, Mo., Kirkwood) in the 17th minute. But Newman (3-10) got on the board ten minutes into the second half, when Renato Ramlochan scored off a cross to cut Truman's lead to 2-1.
The eventual game-winner for Truman came in the 72nd minute, when senior Scott Biggerstaff (Lee's Summit, Mo., Lee's Summit North) slid a low shot through a mass of defenders into the lower right-hand corner of the net to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
Newman, however, wouldn't go away and closed the gap to one again off another free kick as Ramlochan scored again with 7:01 to play in the match.
But Truman held tight the rest of the way, stopping two more Jet attacks – including one as the final whistle sounded – to earn its eighth win of the season and improve to 6-0-1 on its home pitch.
Newman outshot the 'Dogs, 15-14, for the match, and each team took six shots. Truman keeper Tyler Knierim (Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone) stopped four shots to earn his eighth win in net.
Truman will close the home portion of its 2010 regular season on Wednesday afternoon against Rockhurst (Mo.) University starting at 2 pm.
