Bulldogs Stifle Wildcats in Second Half, Roll to 90-59 Win

KIRKSVILLE - - Senior guard Alex Henderson (Willard, Mo., Willard) scored 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including five three-pointers, to lead the Truman men's basketball team to a 90-59 home opening win against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College on Monday night in Pershing Arena.

 

Truman (1-1) shot 50.0% (34-for-68) from the field for the game and used a 22-2 run over the first ten minutes of the second half to pull away from the Wildcats, who couldn't seem to miss in the first 20 minutes, shooting 52% from the floor.

 

But, the Bulldogs clamped down in the second half, forcing 11 CSC turnovers and holding the 'Cats to a 7-for-20 mark, while firing a blistering 57% (20-for-35) of their own.

 

27 of Truman's 68 shot attempts came from long-distance, and the Bulldogs connected on ten – five in each half. Sophomore guard Tom Norton (Bloomington, Ill., Bloomington Catholic) hit a three-pointer in each half, while sophomore Matt Patterson (Shelbina, Mo., South Shelby) and freshmen Isaac Gardner (Washington, Iowa, Washington) and Pat Sodemann (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway West) hit one apiece off the bench.

 

All but one of Truman's players scored, with the Bulldog bench accounting for 35 of the team's 90 points. Junior center Vesko Filchev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria, GPCHE) scored 11 points and reeled in five rebounds, while senior Ethan Freeman (Urbandale, Iowa, Urbandale) and Norton chipped in nine points each. Freeman also led all players with six rebounds.

 

The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards, 36-24, and limited CSC to just four offensive rebounds in the contest. Truman also handed out assists on 22 of its 34 made baskets and committed just ten turnovers (seven coming in the first half).

 

Jordan Jones led the Wildcats with 13 points.

 

The Bulldogs take the next eight days off before returning to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 pm against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College in Pershing Arena.
