KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman men's soccer team lost in a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon against future MIAA opponent Lindenwood (Mo.) University, 2-1.
After more than 30 minutes of solid defense for both squads, the Bulldogs (3-9) took advantage of a Lindenwood foul and scored in the 34th minute of the match. Nick Franta (Ballwin, Mo., Parkway West) was credited with his first goal of the season after finding the back of the net from 10 yards out. Senior Jonathan Brown (Perth, Scotland, Auchterarder) and junior Ben Hasse (St. Charles, Mo., CBC) earned the assists.
The Bulldog defense continued to stay tough until the last two shots by the Lions. In the 72nd minute, Lindenwood (9-7) tied the match with a goal by Craig McTear, his third on the season. Then only three minutes later, the Lions found the net again with a goal from Tiago Pereira. His goal was unassisted and marked his 4th of the season.
Prior to the two goals scored by Lindenwood, Truman goalkeeper Tyler Knierim (Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone) notched four saves in the contest.
Lindenwood outshot Truman 14-10 in today's match, with five of the team's 14 shots on goal. Brown led the squad with four shots and both Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) and Dylan Carter (O'Fallon, Mo., Fort Zumwalt West) tallied up two shots a piece. The 'Dogs had two corner kicks in 90 minutes of play, compared to Lindenwood's one.
With his assist in the match, Brown is now alone at 9th on the all-time assist charts with 20.
Truman will hit the road for the final four games of the 2011 season. The 'Dogs will first travel to Hays, Kan., for 7:00 p.m. scheduled kick-off on Oct. 21st against Fort Hays State (Kan.) University. To finish up the week, they will head to Wichita, Kan. for a meeting against the Newman (Kan.) University Jets on Oct. 23rd. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Sunday's matchup.
