Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – A breakaway goal early in the match by Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) did not prove to be enough as the Truman men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Newman (Kan.) University earlier this afternoon.

After only 11 minutes of play, the first goal of the game was scored by Newman's (5-9-1) Negro Sebastien. Sebastian received a pass from Hussein Pharouk to score his first goal of the 2011 season.

Ten minutes later in the 21st minute, the Bulldogs (3-11) answered back with Chapman's team-leading third goal of the season. Chapman's goal was unassisted as he broke away from Newman's defense to find the back of the net.

The two teams remained tied for only 17 minutes, as in the 38th minute of the contest, Nicos Esquivel of the Jets connected with a pass from Robert Butler. Butler's pass led Esquivel to the right side where he notched his first goal of the year.

Newman outshot the Bulldogs 11-17, with the 'Dogs recording three shots on goal. Truman goalkeepers Tyler Knierim (Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone) and Drew Garrone (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette) combined for seven saves in the contest.

The Bulldogs will wrap-up the 2011 season by heading north to compete in the Upper Iowa Invitational on Oct. 29th and 30th. Their first game will be a match-up against the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) for a 10:30 am scheduled kick-off. On Sunday, they have a 10:30 am kick-off against the University of Mary (N.D.)
