KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A one-out home run in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Washburn Ichabods a 4-3 victory over the Truman Baseball team on Sunday. The Bulldogs are scheduled to set outside of conference play with a doubleheader at home against Maryville (Mo.) on Wednesday afternoon.

Washburn's Tyler Bean got the game-winning RBI while also earning his third win of the season on the mound when he belted a tie-breaking home run off of
Chris Allard in the seventh inning to give the Ichabods the 4-3 win in the series finale. Bean pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits and hit three Bulldogs but took Allard's 2-2 pitch the opposite way over the right field fense to break the tie. Truman took advantage of an error and a walk as
Adam Manzer singled in a pair and
Zak Larkin hit a sac fly to center to put Truman up 3-0 in the second. The Ichabods answered with a run in the fourth and two in the fourth.
Devon Myers and
Jarod Hahn each had two hits for Truman.

Redshirt freshman
Bret Gerstner (1-1) tossed his first complete-game shutout as he allowed just two hits while getting two big double plays and a pickoff in the Bulldogs first league win of the season.
Paul Trenhaile put Truman on the board with a two-out RBI single in the third.
Will Nader had a two-out RBI base hit in the next inning that scored
Jarod Hahn and
Daniel Jewett delievered a two-out RBI single to right to score Trenhaile in the fifth. Gerstner got an inning ending double-play in the first and following a pair of walks in the sixth, got John Calhoun, Washburn's hottest hitter, to ground into the 4-6-3 twin killing to end the frame.

John Calhoun drove in four of the five Washburn runs in the first two innings as the Ichabods took game two by a 5-2 tally. Calhoun went the opposite way in the top of the first for a solo shot and took that same route in the second with a three-run blast. Brad Alberts was a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in the other run. Kerry Schachemeyer (2-0) pitched six innings and AJ Green collected the save while
Logan Siegler went the distance for Truman striking out seven but allowing 11 hits. Truman's two runs came via sac flies as

Brett Ash pitched a complete-game shutout as Washburn used the small ball to take the opener 1-0. Ash struck out eight while walking and hitting one to pick up his first win of the season. Josh Wilder and Ben Reynoldson each laid down perfect bunts to start the fifth inning and advanced up into scoring position on a balk by
Tyler Stefan (0-4). John Calhoun would groundout to third to drive in Wilder for the only run of the game. The Bulldogs had golden opportunities in both the fourth and eighth innings. A two-out double by
Daniel Jewett followed by a walk and basehit by Brett Marino gave
Weston Lewis a chance with the bases load. Lewis fouled a ball down the first base line by mere inches before striking out to end the inning. In the eighth,
Zak Larkin hit a leadoff single and got to third with two outs before

Series Preview:
After showing some fight in an extra inning loss to #2 Central Missouri last Sunday, the Truman Baseball team will host Washburn University in a four-game MIAA series that will kick off Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
Truman (1-11; 0-8 MIAA) pushed the Mules in a pair of games during their weekend series however eight multi-run innings posted by Central aided by 29 walks, 10 hit batsmen and 10 errors led to the series sweep.
A pair of freshman and a senior are hitting above .300 for the Bulldogs thus far.
Jarod Hahn is leading the team with a .366 average and
Zak Larkin is third with a .343 mark while senior
Steven Rose is off to a good start hitting .353 with a team leading six runs batted in. Sophomore
Will Nader enters the weekend with a team-high seven game hitting streak.
The Bulldog pitching staff got solid outings from
Tyler Stefan and
Paul McMahon against the Mules. Stefen posted a 1.69 ERA while striking out five in five and a third innings in the opener against Central while McMahon allowed two earned runs in six plus innings while holding the opponent to just a .227 batting average.
Washburn (4-6; 1-3 MIAA) will play St. Mary's (Texas) on Wednesday before making the trek to Kirksville to begin the four-game series. The Ichabods went 1-3 in their MIAA weekend opener on the road last weekend at Pittsburg State (Kan.). The Gorillas took the first two by scores of 4-3 and 11-8 with Washburn taking game three 17-1 before falling in 12 innings 7-6 in the finale.
Josh Wilder leads the team with a .533 batting average and John Calhoun is hitting .488 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. Tyler Bean leads the MIAA in earned run average as he has posted a 0.64 ERA while going 2-0 in a pair of starts.
Series Schedule:
The four-game series will begin Friday at 3:00 p.m. with a single nine-inning game. A pair of seven-inning games will be played on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. followed by another nine-inning game on Sunday also starting at 1:00 p.m. The series may be altered due to an unstable weather pattern and a 60% chance of rain on Saturday.
