Dogs Pitch Shutout In First GLVC Game

QUINCY, Ill. – The Truman Bulldogs kicked off their first Great Lakes Valley Conference season with a 33-0 shutout victory over the Quincy (Ill.) University Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

Conrad Schottel was efficient with 197 yards passing and completed 20-of-28 on the day. Garrett White gained 81 of Truman's 177 yards on the ground and Jared Haferbier made five receptions for 49 yards.

The defense held the Hawks to 145 yards of total offense and a negative 19 yards rushing aided by nine sacks for 70 yards and 13 tackles for loss. Tremaine Millender had four sacks and nine total tackles.

The Hawks (1-4; 0-1 GLVC) took the opening kickoff and marched 55 yards before a failed fourth down conversion gave the ball to Truman at their own 22. Truman would go three and out in their first possession but Jacob Lamp turned the tide of the game with a punt.

Lamp's 48-yard punt was muffed Dante Flowers and Steven Day recovered the fumble at the Hawks' eight yard line. Quincy held Truman to a Derek Koon 27-yard field goal after a penalty pushed the 'Dogs back.

Koon started the second quarter capping off a 15-play 61-yard drive with another 27-yard field goal to make it 6-0.

The Bulldog defense up the heat and held the Hawk offense to just 51 yards of total offense in the first half.

Meanwhile, the offense scored touchdowns in their next three possessions to build up a 26-0 halftime lead. Aaron Hartfield struck first with an eight-yard scamper and was followed by a one-yard plunge by Conrad Schottel with 3:41 left.

The Bulldogs ended the half with a six-play 73-yard drive in just 1:07 when Schottel found Chico Orlando on a 10-yard pass.
 
Truman will return to GLVC action next Saturday when they head west to face William Jewell in Liberty, Mo. at 1:00 p.m.

Game Notes:

  • The -19 yards rushing was the fewest allowed by the Bulldogs since a -16 rushing day by the Quincy Hawks in a 2001 victory.
  • Garrett White had a career-high 22 rushing attempts, while redshirt freshman Jesse Jenkins made his Bulldog debut with two carries for seven yards in the fourth quarter.
  • Conrad Schottel, Zach Tobin and Devonte Black used 10 different Bulldog receivers on the day in combining to go 22-of-31 for 219 yards.
  • Truman led in time of possession for the first time this season with 30:34 seconds compared to the Hawks' 29:26.
  • The Bulldogs converted on just 2-of-9 third down attempts while the Hawks were 1-of-8 in the first half before going 5-of-9 in the second to finish at 35%.
  • The nine quarterback sacks were the most single game by the Bulldogs since at least 1998 with the previous high of eight coming against St. Joseph's in 2010 and Missouri S&T in 1999.
  • Eight different Bulldogs were credited with quarterback sacks with Tremaine Millender and Luke Lamar each recording a pair.
  • After a three and out in their first possession, Truman scored points in their final five drives in the first half.
  • The average starting passion for the Bulldogs was at their own 47 while the Hawks, on average, started at their own 24.
  • Steven Day and Devin Gillespie each had a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs as Truman finished the day with a plus-one turnover margin.
  • It was the 173rd shutout in Truman's history and first since a 53-0 victory over Lincoln in 2011.
