Volleyball Recap: Two More Wins for Bulldogs in Rolla; Streak at 14

ROLLA, Mo. - - A career-high 26 kills from freshman Jasmine Brown in the opener, coupled with back-to-back double-digit point outings by junior Abby Heise, helped send the Truman volleyball team to its 13th and 14th straight victories on Saturday afternoon. A 3-1 GLVC victory against Missouri S&T opened the day before a 3-0 sweep of Harding (Ark.) in the nightcap at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

Facing a short turnaround following Friday night's 3-1 win at Drury in Springfield, the Bulldogs (16-2, 11-0 GLVC) needed just one extra set to pick up a pair of Saturday wins. The noon opener against S&T (10-8, 7-4 GLVC) featured a pair of top-half GLVC West division squads that battled to a 1-1 split through the first two sets (Truman 25-16, Missouri S&T 25-20).

The third set was incredibly tight as well, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead 22-20 on a Meghan Zimmerman kill on a second touch. However, the Miners battled back and tied the match at 24-24, before an S&T attack error and a Heise putaway gave Truman the 26-24 extra-point set.

Truman only trailed once in the fourth set, eventually pulling away for a 25-19 victory.

Brown was practically unstoppable in her second collegiate start, as she totaled 26 kills and hit .407 for the match, while also adding two solo blocks and three block assists for 29.5 total points. Heise added 13 kills, a pair of block assists, and an ace for 15 points, while junior Ali Patterson recorded seven kills, seven block assists and a solo block for 11.5 total points. Five Bulldogs finished with double-figure digs, led by 19 apiece for Zimmerman and senior Abby Moser. Kayla Bastian (16 digs), Kassi Schroeder (15 digs), and Sidney King (12 digs) also helped the Bulldogs out-dig S&T by seven (98-91).

Truman hit .242 for the match against S&T and held the Miners to a .147 mark. Gracey Moon led the hosts with 12 kills.

Then, in match two of the afternoon, a close first (25-23) and third (25-23) sets sandwiched a Bulldog blowout (25-9) in a 3-0 sweep of non-conferece opponent Harding. Truman hit .234 against the Bison and got a dozen kills and 23 digs from Bastian to set highs on both the offensive and defensive sides.

Heise finished with 11 points behind nine kills and a pair of aces, while Patterson hit .250 with six kills and four more blocks. Zimmerman recorded 36 assists and 10 digs for her second double-double of the day, with Moser adding 21 digs of her own.

"It was a great weekend," head oach Ben Briney said. "We are very happy to come away with three wins against quality opposition. It was a complete team effort."

The Bulldogs will carry their 16-2 overall record to next weekend's GLVC/GLIAC crossover event, held on Friday and Saturday in Aurora, Illinois. Truman will be the No. 1 seed out of the GLVC at 11-0, as the Bulldogs have a two-match lead on a trio of teams (Rockhurst, Indianapolis, Lewis) all at 9-2 in league play. The full schedule will be released on Sunday afternoon and will be posted on TrumanBulldogs.com.
