Volleyball Recap: Truman 3, Bellarmine 1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore Kayla Bastian hit .311 with 15 kills and 22 digs, while junior Abby Heise added 12 kills, four blocks, and a pair of aces to help the 23rd-ranked Truman volleyball team pick up win No. 20 in a 3-1 win at Bellarmine (Ky.) on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (20-2, 12-0 GLVC) pushed its win streak to 18 after coming back to take sets two (25-20), three (25-18), and four (25-14) after dropping the opening set, 25-23. The back and forth opening frame featured 11 ties and seven lead changes, before Truman lost the lead just three times the rest of the way against a BU (10-11, 3-9 GLVC) that had won five of its last seven contests.

Truman committed just 14 attack errors in the match, leading to a .242 hitting line, while the defense was top-notch – holding the Knights to just a .120 attack percentage with 97 digs and eight blocks. The Bulldogs kept the Knights around by committing nine service errors in the first two-plus sets, but ended up with seven aces to go with 10 errors on the day.

Bastian logged a double-double, as did senior Meghan Zimmerman, who finished with 45 assists and 15 digs. Senior Abby Moser led all Bulldogs with 23 digs, while junior Ali Patterson also reached double-figure points with eight kills and five blocks. Junior Emilee Walters hit .429 in three sets with six kills, with senior Allie Brak totaling six kills and 13 digs in two sets.

"Bellarmine played really good defense tonight and made us work for every point," head coach Ben Briney said. "The girls did a good job of keeping in the points and making in-game adjustments. We picked up our serving late and kept them out of system. Kayla, Emilee, and Abby (Heise) had great nights hitting."

Emily McDaniel led BU with 10 kills, while libero Jaclyn Ohlmann was the Bulldogs' top nemesis with 45 digs on the back line.

Truman returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, visiting Southern Indiana in Evansville. The Screaming Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 in Pershing Arena during the regular season last year, before Truman turned the tables with a 3-1 win in the GLVC Quarterfinals.
