Men's Soccer Recap: Truman 1, William Jewell 0

LIBERTY, Mo. - - Redshirt freshman Derek Merry knocked home his first collegiate goal just minutes before halftime, and senior keeper Drew Garrone made it stand up, as the Truman men's soccer team got back in the win column with a 1-0 road win at William Jewell on Friday afternoon.

Merry came on as a late substitution for the Bulldogs (4-4-1, 3-3-1 GLVC) in the first half and found himself at the top of the box on the receiving end of a Craig McLaurine pass with 1:57 left in the opening stanza. It was part of a first half domination by Truman, as the Bulldogs out-shot the host Cardinals (2-6-2, 1-4-2 GLVC) 8-2 in the first 45 minutes.

The second half was much tighter, as each team got four shots off each, but the Bulldog defense held firm and posted its fifth shutout of the 2014 campaign. Jewell banged two off the crossbar in the final 19 minutes; however, Garrone's two first-half saves were all he'd need to make on the day.

Four Bulldogs took two shots each, including Merry, Tony Luedecke, Nick Franta, and Nate Luebbert.

The Bulldogs return to the field looking for a weekend sweep at Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City at 2:30 p.m. The Hawks (5-2, 5-1 GLVC) host the league's other Hawks – Quincy – on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. to open their weekend.
