Swimming Recap: Bulldogs Open Season at Show-Me Showdown

COLUMBIA, Mo. - - A third-place finish by the Truman women's 200 Free Relay squad highlighted the Bulldog men's & women's swimming 2014-15 debuts on Friday afternoon, as the Truman teams competed at the University of Missouri Show-Me Showdown.

The Bulldog quartet of sophomore Evyn Spencer, freshman Jamie Fitzpatrick, sophomore Alison Strickler, and freshman Nikki Sisson brought home third place in the 200 Free Relay, touching the wall in a time of 1:39.28. Both Spencer and Sisson also posted impressive debuts individually, with Spencer - a 2014 NCAA-II all-American - taking fifth in both the 100 Back (59.01) and the 50 Free (24.29), and Sisson making her collegiate debut with a fifth-place finish in the 200 Free (1:55.66) and a sixth-place spot in the 100 Free (53.40). Senior Abby Hempen was Truman's top finisher in the 100 Breast, grabbing a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:06.91, while freshman Libby Opfer's college opener in teh 100 Fly produced a 10th-place time of 59.75.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, freshman Joel Schawe was the team's top finisher in two events, garnering a 12th-place time in the 500 Free (4:47.51) and a mark of 2:01.79 in the 200 IM. Sophomore Neil Girmus grabbed a top-20 spot in the 50 Free, coming through at 21.93.

As a team, the Bulldog women finished seventh in the competitive field, while the Truman men placed 10th.

The teams take next weekend off before returning to the pool on Oct. 17-18. The women's squad travels to Div. I Illinois State for its first dual of the season on the 17th at 4 p.m., before both teams host a tri-meet with Div. I Western Illinois and NAIA Lindenwood-Belleville at 12 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the Pershing Natatorium.
