EAST PEORIA, Ill. - - The Truman State University volleyball team opened the postseason with a 3-0 (-14, -21, -20) sweep of Southern Indiana in the opening round of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday night at the EastSide Centre.

Senior Allie Brak accounted for a team-high 14 kills, a .302 attack line, three aces and seven digs, while junior Ali Patterson hit .588 with 11 kills and four blocks to lead Truman (26-3), who advances to face Missouri S&T (18-12) in the semifinals on Friday night at 5:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs jumped all over the Screaming Eagles (19-11) in the opening set, building a quick 5-1 lead. A USI point snapped the spurt; however, another 4-1 blitz gave Truman a 21-9 edge on the way to a 25-14 first-set decision.

In the second, USI took a 6-5 lead before a 5-0 burst by the Bulldogs put Truman back on top, 10-6. USI would pull to within one at 17-16, and, after the teams traded 4-1 runs, Truman still held a 22-21 edge. Following a Bulldog timeout, junior Abby Heise put away a kill, before Brak dealt an ace for a 24-21 lead. Patterson and sophomore Kayla Bastian then ended the set with an emphatic double block to put Truman up, 2-0.

Finally, in the third set, USI and Truman played to an early 7-7 tie, before a 7-1 Bulldog run gave the purple and white a 14-8 lead. The Bulldogs would eventually lead 18-14, but USI scored four straight to force a Truman timeout at 18-all. Out of the timeout, a USI service error sparked Truman's last big run of the night, as a 7-2 run – capped by back-to-back kills by Patterson and Heise – secured the set at 25-20 and pushed the 'Dogs into the semifinals.
