ALLENDALE, Mich. - - Junior Abby Heise hit .733 with 12 kills, six block assists and a pair of digs, while senior Allie Brak added nine kills, eight digs, and two block assists of her own, as the top-seeded Truman State University volleyball team opened the 2014 NCAA Div. II tournament with a 3-0 (-19, -16, -11) sweep of McKendree (Ill.) University on Thursday afternoon.

Playing in the opening match of Thursday's slate of four quarterfinals, the Bulldogs (29-3) jumped all over eighth-seeded McKendree (20-14) to pick up the team's second win against the Bearcats in the past six days after capturing the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship tournament title on Saturday (Nov. 15). Truman hit .308 for the match and committed just six hitting errors on 91 swings, while McKendree committed 26 hitting errors and hit just .060 against a tough Bulldog block. The Bulldogs swatted 11 Bearcat attack attempts, led by six assists apiece from Heise and junior Emilee Walters.

The first set started out tight, with the squads playing to a 10-9 Bearcat edge at the outset. However, the Bulldogs rattled off a 9-4 run to force the 'Cats' first timeout of the match at 18-14 Truman. After two Bearcat points, Truman scored four more in a row to force another timeout at 22-16. McK never drew within five the rest of the set, as the Bulldogs went on top early, 25-19.

In the second, another tight start was blown wide open by a Bulldog run, as an 8-7 Truman quickly turned into 23-10 behind a 15-3 burst that burned both of McKendree's timeouts in the set. The 'Cats scored six of seven to pull within eight, but a Bearcat hitting miscue sent Truman to the other side of the net ahead, 2-0, with a 25-16 decision.

Then, in the third, Truman led 6-5 before an 8-0 behind a strong serving stretch by Kayla Bastian gave the Bulldogs a 14-5 cushion. Another 5-1 blast just two points later made the margin 19-8, as Truman went on to close out the match with a 6-1 run en route to 25-11.

Heise highlighted the Bulldog attack with 15 total points in three sets, leading all players with a dozen kills next to just one error on 15 swings (.733 hitting line). Brak added nine kills, while Bastian chipped in seven kills as well. Heise (6), Walters (6), and junior Ali Patterson (4) led the Bulldog defense at the net, as the 'Dogs put down 11 blocks in three sets – including five in the second and four in the third.

Senior Meghan Zimmerman set the 'Dogs to a .308 hitting line, posting 27 assists, nine digs, and two aces, while Bastian's 10 digs led Truman along the back line and added a double-double to her stat line. Junior Sidney King added nine digs, with Brak (8), senior Abby Moser (6), and Patterson (6) helping contribute to Truman's 50-47 dig advantage.

Lauren Apetz led McK with 11 kills and hit .269, while libero Abby Hanger notched 16 digs. After recording 18 blocks against the Bulldogs in Saturday's GLVC championship match, the Bearcats managed just three in the regional quarterfinals – led by Sophie Fairman's two block assists.

Truman returns to action at 4 p.m. (CT) on Friday night to face the winner of Thursday's No. 4/No. 5 matchup between GLVC-rivals Rockhurst (Mo.) University and the University of Indianapolis.
