Truman and Indianapolis Split Weekend GLVC Series

INDIANAPOLIS – Truman and the University of Indianapolis spilt a four-game series this weekend. The Bulldogs won 10-5 and 7-5 in the first game of both days doubleheaders while the Greyhounds took each nightcap by scores of 10-9 and 11-1. Truman is scheduled to host Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Three of the four games saw both teams come-from-behind to pick up the wins. Truman scored nine runs in their final two at bats to win the opener while the Greyhounds walked off game two of the day with back-to-back solo home runs. Day two continued the trend with the Bulldogs coming back from a 5-0 deficit to win, however Indianapolis silenced the Truman bats in the finale with an 11-1 victory.
 
Will Nader had four hits on Saturday and was 6-of-12 for the series. Paul Trenhaile had six hits in 13 at bats and Chris Zrostlik picked up five hits during the series. The threesome contributed 13 RBIs and a .310 team batting average.
 
Alex Ritchie had the big weekend for the Greyhounds. Ritchie had 10 hits in 15 at bats. Kenny Mahala had eight RBIs and the Greyhounds had 14 extra base hits including five home runs to the Bulldogs three extra base hits.
 
Game 1 Recap: The Bulldogs exploded for nine runs in their final two at bats to come from behind and defeat the Greyhounds 10-5 in the series opener.
 
Indianapolis struck first with a two-out RBI single by Joe Trennepohl in the bottom of the first and added a solo home run by Zach Jacobs in the fourth.
 
Truman offense showed signs of life in the sixth when Corban Williams led off with a triple and came in on a single by Paul Trenhaile. The Bulldogs had runners in scoring position but Blake Deaton's liner was snared at third allowed the Greyhounds to double up Trenhaile ending the inning.
 
Mark Roberts retired the first two in the seventh but ran into a jam following a double from Alex Ritchie. Alex Hoffman came in with the bases loaded and gave up a two-run single by Jacobs with a wild pitch afterwards and a 5-1 Indianapolis lead.
 
The Bulldogs had the top of the order up in the eighth and faced new pitcher Aaron Gregory. Zak Larkin singled, Williams reached on a fielder's choice/error and Trenhaile singled to load the bases. The Greyhounds brought Ryan Byrne in from the pen he promptly allowed RBI singles to Chris Zrostlik, Deaton before Dave Gambino gave Truman the lead on a two-run single to right on a 1-2 pitch. Bob Kwekel came on in relief and balked the runners into scoring position with Will Nader delivering a clutch, two-run single up the middle.
 
Hoffman set the Greyhounds down in order in the eighth and Truman added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth and finished the game with 17 basehits.
 
Hoffman picked up the win in relief to improve his record to 2-1 on the season while Trenhaile and Jarod Hahn continued their torrid hitting. Trenhaile was 4-of-5 and Hahn 3-of-4 from the dish.
 
Game 2 Recap: Truman started game two right where they left off with six runs in the first two innings. Zak Larkin singled and Corban Williams doubled him in. Paul Trenhaile brought in Williams on a groundout for a 2-0 lead.
 
In the second, Williams hit a sac fly to left scoring Dave Gambino to start a four-run frame. Chris Zrostlik plated two more runs on a basehit through the right side.
 
The Greyhounds responded with three of their own in the bottom of the second but the Bulldogs got the runs right back in the top of the third. Williams and Zrostlik each drew bases loaded walks and Truman led 9-3.
Indianapolis chipped away at the lead with a run in the third and two more in the fourth.
 
Zach Jacobs greeted reliever Cody Gardner with a single in the sixth to score a run and pinch hitter Brady Thomas lifted a sac fly to right to make it 9-8. Gardner retired the next two hitters leaving the bases loaded.
 
The Bulldogs were set down in order in the top of the seventh and with the first two outs made in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Asalon tied the game on the first pitch he saw with a home run and Alex Ritchie won the game with a blast on a 2-2 count.
 
Game 3 Recap: Will Nader was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Paul Trenhaile delivered the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh as the Bulldogs overcame their own 5-0 deficit to win 7-5 in the first game on Saturday.
 
The Greyhounds struck first in the second inning with a one-out double by Zach Jacobs and an RBI single by Kenny Mahala. Luke Andrade singled to bring in Mahala for the 2-0 lead.
 
A two-out infield single by Anthony Asalon followed by a two-run single up the middle from Alex Ritchie gave the Greyhounds a 5-0 lead after four innngs.
 
Back-to-back walks to start the top of the fifth followed by a pitching change and then a catcher's interference call loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. Mike Monfre drew a bases loaded walk and Nader had a clutch two-run single down the left field line. Zak Larking grounded out but got the run home however the Bulldogs left two runners in scoring position as Trenhaile struck out and Jarod Hahn flied out to end the inning with the Bulldogs trailing 5-4.
 
Indianapolis stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth and Asalon ended the sixth by being called out while trying to steal home.
 
T.J. Wood was hit by a pitch to start the seventh and advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt by Nader. Larkin tied the game with a single to right and moved up to second on a stolen base. Corban Williams coxed a walk and Trenhaile redeemed himself with a single to center to plate Larkin for the go-ahead run. Williams would later score an insurance tally on a wild pitch.
 
Cody Gardner relieved Taylor Brooks after a lead-off walk but got a big double-play and a fly out to notch his second save of the season. Brooks picked up the win in relief of starter Tim Lee, allowing one hit in one inning of work. Lee worked five innings and allowed five runs, only one earned.
 
Game 4 Recap: The Greyhounds built an early lead and more importantly was able to silence the Bulldog bats to take the series finale 11-1 in seven innings. Kenny Mahala had six RBIs including the a big grand slam in the bottom of the first to stake Indianapolis out to a 5-0 lead.
 
Truman got a run back in the third when Jarod Hahn worked a four-pitch bases loaded walk but Chris Zrostlik grounded out to leave them loaded.
 
Consecutive singles and an error loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Mahala kept his stick hot with a two-run single through the right side. Luke Andrade added an RBI single for an 8-1 lead.
 
The Greyhounds tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
 
Jordan Tackett scattered four hits and walked three en route to his second win of the season. Tyler Spencer was tagged with the loss.
