Bulldogs Drop Opener of Thanksgiving Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - - The Truman men's basketball team trailed by just three at the break in the opening game of the Drury Thanksgiving Classic against Union (Tenn.); however, UU shot 64% in the second half and Truman missed all 16 of its three-point tries to try and mount a comeback before eventually falling 84-53 on Friday afternoon.
 
Truman (3-2) led by five – 22-17 – with 7:21 to play in the first half against Union (5-0), but a quick 7-0 burst by UU put the red and white Bulldogs on top, 24-22. The teams would go into the break with UU leading 31-28, with Truman trailing by just three despite turning the ball over nine times and hitting just three three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
 
However, in the second half, nothing went right for the purple and white, as Union scored 15 of the first 18 points of the half to take a 46-31 lead. From there, UU kept its blazing shooting going, hitting 21-of-33, while Truman countered with a rare blanking from beyond the arc in the half. For the game, Truman shot just 36.8% (21-of-57) from the floor and connected on 3-of-28 (10.7%) of its three-point tries.
 
Connor Erickson led all Bulldogs with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Andrew Vander Zwaag added 10 points.
 
Marterrace Brock scored 30 points for UU, and Ashanti Day added 20 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Bulldogs will close the Thanksgiving Classic at 1 p.m. tomorrow against Cameron (Okla.). The Aggies face weekend-host Drury at 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon prior to Saturday's contest.
