Story Links

KIRKSVILLE - - Junior guard Kyle Kanaskie led all scorers with 19 points, while sophomore Zach Fischer (17) and junior Connor Erickson (14) also finished in double-figures as the Truman men's basketball team shook off a finals hangover to defeat Grace (Neb.) 89-65 on Saturday night in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs (6-3) got off to a sluggish start of being off for the last week due to fall semester finals on the Truman campus, shooting just 38% in the first half and carrying only a 36-28 lead into the intermission. However, the purple and white came alive in the second half, shooting 68% (19-for-28) from the field and hitting five three-pointers to out-score the Royals (4-6) 53-37 in the final 20 minutes of play.

Overall on the night, Truman hit 33-of-65 field goal attempts (50.8%) and connected on 8-of-24 (33.3%) from three-point range. Kanaskie's game-high 19 came on 7-of-9 shooting (2-of-4 3FG) and a 3-for-3 night at the foul line in 26 minutes of work. Fischer, meanwhile, was unstoppable during his 16 minutes of time off the bench, as he hit all seven of his field goals (2-for-2 3FG) from the floor. Erickson poured in his 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting in just 18 minutes.

Senior Cole Myers finished one rebound shy of 10, filling the stat sheet with five points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals, while freshman Nikola Pesic came off the bench to score seven points, grab five rebounds, and dish out five helpers. Junior Cory Myers had top assist honors on the night with six, as the Bulldogs handed out 21 assists to just 11 turnovers and turned 15 Grace turnovers into 20 points on the offensive end.

Truman out-rebounded GU, 43-29, including a 16-9 edge on the offensive glass.

The Bulldogs return to action with three games next week, starting with a key Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown with arch-rival Quincy at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, in Pershing Arena. The Hawks will come to Kirksville at 5-3 overall (2-0 GLVC), with the Bulldogs one game back at 1-1 through two league games.
