BOX SCORE (.PDF)
SEASON STATS

QUINCY, Ill. - - The Truman men's basketball team blazed its way to a 21-2 lead in the first five minutes of action and kept the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley in the rearview mirror the rest of the day on the way to an 86-68 victory in the opening game of the 2015 Quincy Holiday Classic.

The Bulldogs (8-3) have now won four straight – increasing the longest streak of the 2015-16 season – while Ohio Valley, a member of the Midwest region's Great Midwest Athletic Conference, fell to 2-9 with the loss. For the game, Truman hit 30 of 59 total field goals (50.8%), which included a red-hot 13-of-27 (48.1%) mark from behind the three-point line.

Truman hit seven three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game, taking a 29-11 lead at the second media timeout of the first half. The lead jumped to 20, 35-15, with 8:35 to go in the first half and went to 24 on a Cole Myers old-fashioned three-point play with just five seconds to play in the half, giving the purple and white a 51-27 lead at the break.

The only hiccup in the second half came eight minutes in, when OVU crept to within 11 at 61-50; however, a fast 11-2 spurt by the Bulldogs pushed the lead back to 20 once again at 72-52 with 8:30 to play. Truman ran the lead to a game-high 27 points, before the Fighting Scots out-scored the Bulldogs down the stretch to cut the final deficit to just 18 at 86-68.

Four players finished in double-figures for the Truman offense, led by senior guard Andrew Vander Zwaag's 15 (4-7 FG, 3-4 3FG, 4-4 FT) points in 22 minutes. Junior guard Kyle Kanaskie (13 pts), junior forward Connor Erickson (13 pts, 7 rebs), and junior forward Billy Daniel (10 pts, 8 rebs) also finished with 10-plus points for the Bulldogs, while junior guard Cory Myers chipped in nine points and a game-high five assists.

Truman forced 22 Fighting Scot turnovers that led to 34 points directly on the offensive end.

The Bulldogs will face Southern Arkansas (4-5) at 1 p.m. on Sunday to close the QU Classic. The Muleriders fell by a 100-76 score in Saturday afternoon's second game against the host Hawks.

Additional Notes:
  • The Bulldogs took a 1-0 all-time series lead against Ohio Valley, as Saturday marked the first meeting between the squads.
  • Both Billy Daniel (8) and Connor Erickson (7) set new career-highs in rebounds.
  • Jake Velky, already amongst the GLVC leaders in three-point percentage, hit 3-of-6 on Saturday, reaching his previous-career-high in three-point makes.
  • The Bulldogs have now won their last 22 games when they reach the 80-point mark on offense (7-0 in 2015-16).
