Bulldog Men Clip Cardinals in Final Seconds

Story Links

LIBERTY, Mo. - - Senior Cole Myers' 15-foot jumper along the baseline with just five seconds to play propelled the Truman men's basketball team to a 76-75 victory at William Jewell on Saturday afternoon.

A frenetic final minute saw one tie score and three lead changes, as William Jewell (2-4, 0-2 GLVC) evened the game at 73-all with 56 seconds to play on a three-pointer by Darius Tomlin – the game's leading scorer with 24. A foul with 31 seconds left sent Myers to the foul line, where he proceeded to give Truman (5-3, 1-1 GLVC) a 74-73 lead after splitting a pair of free throws. However, WJC's Javier De La Blanca converted a lay-up with 11 seconds left, prompting a timeout by Bulldog head coach Chris Foster. Out of the huddle, Truman set up the senior, who hit the go-ahead basket with less than five seconds left on the clock. A final heave by Tomlin didn't drop, helping Truman salvage a split during the opening weekend of GLVC play.

Truman led by 11 at the break, 46-35, despite getting whistled for 15 fouls and sending William Jewell to the line 19 times in the opening 20 minutes. Junior guard Kyle Kanaskie led the Bulldogs with half of his game-high 16 points in the first half, while junior guard Cory Myers and sophomore guard Zach Fischer chipped in six points apiece.

The Bulldog lead ballooned to as many as 14 in the first minute of the second half and continued to lead by 10, 68-58, on a pair of free throws by senior guard Andrew Vander Zwaag with 5:16 left on the clock. However, the Cardinals fought back by out-scoring Truman 15-5 over the next four minutes and 20 seconds, leading to the final minute stretch.

Kanaskie's team-high 16 points led four Bulldogs in double-figures, as the State College, Pa.-native was joined by Cory Myers' 12, Cole Myers' 10, and 10 more from Vander Zwaag. The Bulldogs shot 43.9% (25-for-57) overall from the floor and hit 10 three-pointers. Truman left 10 points at the foul line, converting just 16-of-26 (61.5%), and did get out-rebounded by a 43-31 count. However, Truman turned 15 Jewell turnovers into 19 points and totaled 12 assists – fueled by a career-high five from Vander Zwaag.

WJC shot 44.2% (23-for-52) overall from the field but went just 5-of-20 (25.0%) from beyond the arc. The Cardinals closed the game 24-for-31 (77.4%) at the line, with Tomlin getting 12 of his game-high 24 from the stripe.

Truman will take the next week off for finals before returning to the court for a non-conference home game against Grace (Neb.) at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12.
