Softball Recap: Bulldogs Post 1-3 Mark in Arkansas Opener

Game 1 Box Score (Fort Hays 11, Truman 1)
Game 2 Box Score (Southern Arkansas 10, Truman 7)

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - - The Truman State University softball team came out on the wrong side of a pair of high-scoring games on Saturday afternoon at the Arkansas-Monticello Div. II Classic, as former MIAA rival Fort Hays State handed the Bulldogs a 11-1 loss in game one before Southern Arkansas scored runs late to deal a 10-7 defeat in game two.

In game one, Fort Hays State pounded out 16 hits while limiting Truman's offensive production to just a Jamie Fowle RBI single in a five-inning, 11-1 decision. Hannah Wehar logged a triple for Truman, as Kindra Henze took the loss in the circle.

Then, in game two, the Bulldogs and the Lady Muleriders dealt punch and counterpunch all afternoon, as Truman rebounded from a three-run top of the first by SAU to plate two in the bottom half. Ally McReynolds reached on an error by the SAU SS that permitted Andrea Klipsch to come home, before Haley Wells was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Liz Leath.

Two innings later, after an SAU solo shot in the top of the third, McReynolds then belted her first round-tripper of the season, as the two-run shot evened the game at 4-all.

The teams would again trade a three-run SAU half with a two-run Truman half in the fifth, as Liz Leath sent a ball soaring out to left to cut the deficit to 7-6. SAU would build a 10-6 lead heading into the last of the seventh; however, a leadoff solo home run by Alexis VanNostrand wasn't enough to spark a comeback.

Leath went a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, while both VanNostrand and Devin Gudehus added two hits each. Gudehus was Truman's top offensive weapon on the weekend, hitting .714 with a pair of doubles in three starts.

The Bulldogs (1-3) are next slated for a Sunday, Feb. 22 doubleheader at Lindenwood (Mo.) in St. Louis. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.

Friday Recap
Game 1 Box Score (Truman 1, Harding 0)
Game 2 Box Score (Missouri Western 3, Truman 2)

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - - Junior Kelsea Dorsey threw a complete game, four-hitter in the 2015 season opener, and sophomore Alexis Van Nostrand belted Truman's first home run of the season in game two, as the Bulldog softball team opened the year with a day one split at the Arkansas-Monticello Div. II Classic.

In the season-opener against Harding, an RBI single from sophomore Devin Gudehus in the third inning plated fellow sophomore Haley Wells to put Truman on top, 1-0, in the third inning. Outside of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth, Dorsey (1-0) had the rest of the game on cruise control – surrendering just one extra-base hit and dealing four three-up, three-down innings – to log her first win of the season. Gudehus' two hits led the Bulldog attack, while both senior Andrea Klipsch and Wells added base knocks.

In game two, the Bulldogs and Griffons traded runs in the first and third innings, before Missouri Western pushed across the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Van Nostrand opened scoring in the top of the first with a solo shot to center. Then, in the third, senior Liz Leath singled home Klipsch for the Bulldogs' second run of the game. Junior Kindra Henze took the loss for the Bulldogs in her 2015 debut, giving up three earned runs in six innings. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Truman (1-1) returns to action on Saturday morning with games against Fort Hays (Kan.) State at 9 a.m. and Southern Arkansas at 11 a.m.
