Softball Recap: Truman Scores 23 Runs in First Two Florida Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - - The Truman softball team hit a combined .489 and pounded out 23 unanswered runs in a two-game sweep on Friday at the 2015 National Training Center Spring Games, picking up a 12-3 (5 inn.) win against St. Cloud (Minn.) State and an 11-0 (5 inn.) win against Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State.

The Bulldogs (3-3) return to action on Saturday afternoon against two more regional foes – Ohio Dominican (12 p.m. CT) and Grand Valley (Mich.) State (2 p.m. CT) in central Florida.

Game 1 (Truman 12-3; 5 inn.)
After falling behind 3-0 through two innings, the Bulldogs scored six in both the home halves of the third and fourth innings to run-rule St. Cloud (Minn.) State, 12-3, in the team's 2015 NTC Spring Games opener.

The Bulldogs used the two big innings to propel past SCSU (5-6), as four Truman starters recorded multi-hit games. Junior Whitney Richardson went 2-for-3 with a team-high four RBI, while sophomore Devin Gudehus batted a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI of her own. Senior Liz Leath (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and freshman Jamie Fowle (2-for-3) each posted big games at the plate in defense of junior Kelsea Dorsey, who improved to 2-1 on the season with a complete game four-hitter. She struck out one and needed just 49 pitches to get through her outing.

Truman totaled five doubles, including two from Richardson, while senior Ally McReynolds notched her second stolen base of the season.

Game 2 (Truman 11-0; 5 inn.)
The offensive onslaught continued in game two, as the Bulldogs posted three multi-run innings to blank Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State 11-0.

Leath opened scoring with a two-run blast in the top of the first, before Fowle, sophomore Alexis VanNostrand, and McReynolds added RBIs in the third to increase Truman's lead to 5-0. Then, in the fourth, the Bulldogs recorded their third six-run inning of the day – bringing across a half-dozen in the top of the fourth with just three hits.

Senior Andrea Klipsch and Fowle recorded two hits apiece, with the duo and VanNostrand touching home twice each. Junior Kindra Henze earned her first win of the season, striking out five in her complete game shutout. She gave up just three hits – all singles – and used just 59 pitches.
