Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Take Softball to 8-4

CLERMONT, Fla. - - The Truman softball team closed its Spring 2015 Florida trip with a 7-1 record on Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs earned a day four sweep of Lynn (Fla.) and Millersville (Pa.) at the Foundation Academy Fields just outside of Clermont.

Sophomore Alexis VanNostrand recorded a three-run home run and a triple at the plate, while juniors Kindra Henze and Kelsea Dorsey were masterful in the circle in the wins. Truman opened the day with a 9-2 win against Lynn before capping the night with a 2-0 blanking of Millersville.

Truman will fly home first-thing Wednesday and prepare for its opening weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference play this Saturday and Sunday, when the purple and white welcome both Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis to the Bulldog Softball Park.

Game 1 (Truman 9-2)
Kelsea Dorsey struck out nine in seven innings, while the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-2 lead through two innings en route to a 9-2 victory against the Fighting Knights of Lynn.

The Bulldogs got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, when senior Liz Leath doubled home freshman Jamie Fowle and VanNostrand for a 2-0 lead. After a LU two-run shot in the top of the second, the Bulldogs put up four runs in a pair of at-bats, as senior Andrea Klipsch singled home freshman Alyssa Spoerer in front of a VanNostrand three-run bomb.

Sophomore Haley Wells scampered home on a throwing error in the bottom of the third, with senior Ally McReynolds adding to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout. Wells then reached on a fielding error by the Lynn shortstop in the sixth, bringing home McReynolds for the 9-2 margin.

Fowle and Leath recorded three hits apiece, with VanNostrand going 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Dorsey, meanwhile, improved to 5-1 in the circle on the year – tossing a complete game with nine punch-outs and no walks. She scattered eight hits throughout the game, surrendering only the two-run shot as earned runs.

Game 2 (Truman 2-0)
Kindra Henze recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts, while a Wells RBI triple and a Leath sacrifice fly came through with enough on the offensive side for a 2-0 Bulldog blanking of Millersville (Pa.) in the nightcap of Tuesday's action.

Henze set the tone all night – striking out the side in the first inning and recording at least one an inning the rest of the way – as the junior didn't walk a single batter in improving her season record to 3-3.

After junior Whitney Richardson was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the second, Wells delivered a base-knock down the right-field line that rolled all the way to the wall – giving Richardson time to come around to score as Wells cruised into third with a triple and a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the fourth, VanNostrand led off with a triple of her own before coming home one batter later on a Leath sacrifice fly to center.

The game featured just nine hits under the night sky, as the Bulldogs logged their fourth straight victory.
