Softball Sweeps Parkside to Open GLVC Play

KIRKSVILLE - - Pitchers Kelsea Dorsey and Kindra Henze did not allow a single earned run in a pair of complete games on Saturday, as the Truman softball team swept UW-Parkside 7-1 and 3-0 in both the team's Great Lakes Valley Conference and home openers at the Truman Softball Park.

The Bulldogs (10-4, 2-0 GLVC) staked the junior duo to early leads in both games, as the Rangers (4-11, 0-2 GLVC) mustered just nine hits in 14 innings. Senior Liz Leath went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader, while fellow senior Andrea Klipsch continued her hot streak by belting her fourth home run of the season on a 3-for-7 day.

Truman returns to action tomorrow for a Sunday twinbill with Lewis (Ill.) at 12 p.m. in Kirksville. The Flyers (11-6, 2-0 GLVC) also opened GLVC play with a sweep on Saturday, winning two at Quincy.

Game 1 (Truman 7-1)
Early wildness allowed Truman to build a lead before the bats woke up and added to it in a 7-1 home opening win against UWP in game one.

The bottom half of the Truman lineup patiently – and painfully – got the Bulldog offense rolling in the second and third, as five base on balls and two hit by pitches helped lead the purple and white to a 3-0 lead midway through the third. After an error extended the inning and allowed another run to score, Klipsch singled home two more to push Truman's lead to 6-0.

Junior Whitney Richardson would double home junior Nikki Moss in the fourth, before the Bulldogs coasted to the 7-1 final – with UWP's lone run coming unearned in the top of the seventh.

Both Klipsch and Leath tallied multi-hit games with two apiece, while Dorsey ran her record to 6-1 with a complete game five-hitter, giving up just one run (unearned) alongside one strikeout. She did not walk a batter.

Game 2 (Truman 3-0)
Three runs in the first two innings proved to be well more than Kindra Henze would need in game two, as the junior hit double-figure strikeouts for the second straight outing in the Bulldogs' 3-0 win to earn the sweep.

Klipsch delivered her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning to stake Truman to a 1-0 lead. After a Lex Van Nostrand single and stolen base, Leath doubled to left, plating Van Nostrand easily for a 2-0 lead.

Senior Ally McReynolds doubled to lead off the bottom of the second, with sophomore Devin Gudehus then coming through one batter later with an RBI single.

The Bulldogs would spread runners out throughout the rest of the game but never came through with any additional insurance. However, that would prove unnecessary as Henze (4-3) struck out 10 in her complete game, as the Palmyra, Mo.-native allowed just four hits and gave up just one walk.
