Bulldogs, Hawks Play to Split on Windy Friday

Game 1 Box Score (Truman 10-2, 6 inn.)
Game 2 Box Score (Rockhurst 5-2)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman softball team settled for a home split against Rockhurst on Friday afternoon, as the Bulldogs took game one, 10-2, before falling 5-2 in the second half of action.

The Bulldogs (24-8, 14-4 GLVC) used a big first inning in game one, before Rockhurst (21-13, 12-8 GLVC) took advantage of Truman miscues to post a big number in the second inning of game two. From there, dominant starting pitching performances by Truman's Kelsea Dorsey and RU's Bridgette Sappington carried the squads to the Friday split.

Truman returns to action on Saturday at noon when the Bulldogs host William Jewell in Kirksville for two games.

Game 1 Recap
A six-run first inning and a 15-hit outburst by the Bulldog offense propelled Truman to a 10-2, run-rule decision in Friday's opener.

Haley Wells went 4-for-4 with four RBI for Truman, including the game-winning RBI with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Andrea Klipsch added three hits and two RBI. Liz Leath, Ally McReynolds, and Nikki Moss each added multi-hit games, while Kadie Orenstein drove in two runs as well.

The Bulldogs batted around in the top of the first, with five of the six runs coming with two outs. Truman's 7-8-9 hitters of Wells, Moss, and Orenstein went 3-for-3 in the frame, logging two doubles and five RBI to help the purple and white overcome a fast 1-0 deficit and take a 6-1 lead.

From there, despite the wind blowing straight out, Dorsey was tough as nails in the circle, as she pitched a complete game five-hitter, surrendering just two runs while striking out six. She improved to 12-1 on the season, using just 73 pitches to record 18 outs.

Game 2 Recap
The Bulldogs got sloppy on defense, and Rockhurst took advantage as part of a big four-run second inning in a 5-2 Hawks decision in game two.

After taking an early 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Truman committed two costly errors in the top of the second – permitting a total of four RU runners to touch home and flipping the score to 4-1 in favor of the guests. A McReynolds RBI single in the fifth would bring the score to within two, but the Hawks tallied an unearned run in the top of the sixth to push the margin back to three, where it would finish at 5-2.

The Bulldogs mustered just four hits in the finale, with Lex Van Nostrand going a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate. Klipsch and McReynolds recorded Truman's other hits, while Kindra Henze took the loss after pitching a complete game eight-hitter where she struck out three.
