QUINCY, Ill.  – Peter Young pitched a scoreless ninth and Matt Tometz picked up his first collegieate victory as Truman earned a GLVC West Division split with rival Quincy University on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks won game one 8-3 while the Bulldogs took game two 4-2.

Truman will welcome Missouri S&T to the Bulldog Baseball Field this weekend for a four-game series starting on Saturday at noon.

Game 1 Recap: The Hawks roughed up starter Cody Gardner for eight runs, seven earned in an 8-3 win in the first game. A six-run third inning turned a 2-1 Truman lead into a 7-2 deficit.

Quincy got on the scoreboard first with a one-out double by JP Meyer in the second. The Bulldogs responded with two of their own in the top of the third. Jarod Hahn doubled to left scoring T.J. Wood and Wyatt Fones for the lead.

It didn't last long. The first six reached for Quincy in the bottom of the inning and a total of 11 hitters went to the plate in the six-run frame. Six of the seven hits in the inning were singles.

Blake Deaton led off the fourth with a single but was out trying to stretch it into a double.

Quincy added another run in the bottom of the fourth and loaded the bases in the fifth but Austin Tinsley got the final out of the inning without allowing a run to score.

Despite down four, Truman had their chances. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but came away with just one run on a bases loaded two-out walk to Wood.

In the seventh, Truman again put the ducks on the pond with one-out but Kyle Smith struck out swinging and Adam Gregorich grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Gardner's bid to tie for the Truman career wins lead came up short as he was tagged with the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season. Jason O'Brien was the winner for the Hawks to improve to 3-2.

Game 2 Recap: The Bulldog bullpen came up with the key pitches and Truman rallied for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Matt Tometz and Peter Young pitched the final four-plus innings, allowing just three hits to earn the win and save respectively. Tometz went three and a third giving up three hits and a walk matching his longest outing of the season. Young nailed down his third straight save in the last five days pitching the final inning 1-2-3.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second when Blake Deaton reached on a two-base error and stole third. T.J. Wood singled through the right side for the RBI.

Quincy tied the game in the fourth on a bunt single by Dominic Miles but left runners on the corners.

A double by Gordon Gundaker and a single by Kory Wisdom chased starter Nate Lukas and gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead through five.
With two outs in the seventh, Chris Iliopoulos greeted new pitcher Jake Wehde with an RBI single to tie the game at two and Adam Gregorich gave Truman the lead on a base hit to left that scored Deaton.

Tometz got a groundout to end the seventh with two runners in scoring position.

Zak Larkin manufactured an insurance run for the Bulldogs in the eighth. Larkin drew a one-out walk on a full count then stole both second and third. Jarod Hahn brought him home with a single to left field.

Quincy had runners on the corners with one-out in their half of the eighth but Tometz got a pop-up to the catcher Wyatt Fones and a lineout to Paul Trenhaile at first to end the threat.

Young retired the Hawks in order for the save.
