Softball Drops Two at #3 UMSL

Game 1 Box Score (UMSL 6-4)
Game 2 Box Score (UMSL 8-1)

ST. LOUIS - - Sophomore Devin Gudehus and freshman Jamie Fowle both homered, but a pair of strong pitching performances from UMSL's Hannah Perryman helped the third-ranked Tritons pick up a home sweep of the Truman softball team on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (23-7, 13-3 GLVC) lost just their third and fourth games since mid-February, as an early lead in game one couldn't hold up against the UMSL bats. The Tritons hit seven homers on the day, while Perryman logged a total of nine innings between two games and struck out 23 Bulldogs.

Truman returns to action at home on Wednesday (April 8) afternoon when it hosts Quincy in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.

Game 1 Recap
An early 3-0 lead couldn't hold up for the Bulldogs, as UMSL got two runs in the last of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie in a 6-4 Triton win.

The Bulldogs got on the board right away, as senior Liz Leath singled home Fowle for a 1-0 lead. Then, an inning later, Gudehus sent her third homerun of the year over the wall to score sophomore Haley Wells.

UMSL would bounce back to take a 4-3 lead into the sixth, before junior Whitney Richardson reached on an error and plated sophomore Lex Van Nostrand to even the score at 4-all.

But, a two-run home run in the bottom half by UMSL broke the deadlock, as Truman could not rebound in the top of the seventh to even the tally.

Junior Kelsea Dorsey started and went 4.1 innings while striking out seven, before junior Kindra Henze came in to pitch 1.2 innings of relief. She took the loss despite giving up just one earned run and not walking a batter.

Game 2 Recap
A five home run game for the host Tritons and an 18-strikeout performance by Perryman kept the Bulldogs from picking up the split, as UMSL took an 8-1 decision in the nightcap.

Truman's lone run came in the third inning when Fowle homered with one out to cut the UMSL lead to 2-1. She and senior Andrea Klipsch recorded the Bulldogs' two hits in the game.

Henze started and struck out four but took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, before Dorsey entered in relief and pitched the final 1.2 innings, striking out two.
