Baseball Stays Unbeaten at Regional with 5-3 Win Against Drury

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - - Junior Mark Roberts delivered a strong pitching performance, while fellow junior T.J. Wood led the Truman offense with three hits, as the Bulldog baseball team advanced to Sunday's NCAA-II Midwest regional championship with a 5-3 victory against Drury (Mo.) on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (34-20) remained unbeaten at the regional, improving to 3-0 by handing Drury (33-24-1) a loss for the second straight night. Truman, the No. 4 seed in the regional, will face sixth-seeded Ashland (Ohio) at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex on the Lindenwood (St. Charles) University campus. AU will need to beat the Bulldogs twice, while Truman will just need to defeat Ashland once, as the Eagles enter Sunday's contest at 2-1 on the weekend.

Truman never had the big inning like it has grown accustomed to at the regional; however, the Bulldogs pushed across single runs in both the first and second innings to jump on top, 2-0.  Sophomore Dave Gambino singled home senior Zak Larkin in the first, before Wood brought home senior Jarod Hahn with a single in the second.

Drury would answer with two runs in the third and would put Truman in the hole for the first time this weekend with a wild pitch scoring run in the top of the sixth. However, the Bulldogs battled right back, as Wood drove home Hahn once again with a sharp single back up the middle in the home half of the sixth inning.

After Roberts posted a three-up, three-down line in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs capitalized for the second straight evening on DU miscues to put a crooked number on the scoreboard. After senior Paul Trenhaile opened the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the DU second baseman, Gambino singled, and freshman Brendan Trimble laid down a sacrifice bunt to set up runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Michael Venturella then reached on a throwing error by the Panther pitcher, allowing Trenahile to score the go-ahead run. Then, Hahn laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, taking the out but scoring Gambino for a touch of insurance.

A two-out double by Drury chased Roberts in the top of the eighth, but freshman Matt Tometz entered and induced a quick ground-out to end the threat.

Then, in the ninth, freshman Peter Young logged his sixth save of the season, as he pitched a perfect frame with three flyouts.

Wood (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Gambino (2-for-5) led the Bulldogs at the plate, as Truman out-hit Drury 9-8 on the night. The Bulldogs left 11 runners on base to Drury's eight; however, Drury committed three errors that led to two unearned runs.

Roberts (W, 5-2) pitched 7.2 innings and gave up eight hits and three walks; however, he used just 89 pitches and kept the ball on the ground with 13 of his 23 outs recorded coming via a groundout.

Ashland advanced to Sunday's regional championship after coming from behind to defeat William Jewell 5-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles, like Truman, have played just one game per day at the event, having fallen 6-5 in 10 innings to Quincy on Thursday and having knocked out Grand Valley State 4-1 on Friday morning. Sunday will mark the first meeting all-time between the two squads.
