Men's Soccer Downs Saints, 1-0

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Truman senior midfielder Corey Nolte's penalty kick goal in the first half was all the Bulldogs needed on Friday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Park, as the purple and white opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 1-0 victory against Maryville.

The Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0 GLVC) got their first goal of the 2015 season in the 16th minute with Nolte's penalty kick. Nolte got the opportunity after junior Tyler Luebbert was chipped down in the box on a two-on-two opportunity, causing the whistle and follow-up penalty for the 'Dogs. The teams each took three shots in the first half (one on goal) in an evenly-matched opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Bulldogs found themselves in a precarious spot with 27 minutes to play, as defender Joel Reft picked up his second yellow card of the day and was sent off with a red card. Truman battled and maintained the 1-0 edge though, holding on for the one-goal victory and a clean sheet.

The Saints (2-1, 0-1 GLVC) outshot Truman 8-6 on the day, with Maryville also earning a 6-5 edge on corner kicks. Reft led all Bulldogs with two total shots, while freshman Drew Orf notched his first collegiate shutout by making two saves in goal.

Truman returns to action this Sunday afternoon in St. Louis when the Bulldogs battle Mo.-St. Louis at 2:30 p.m.
