Men's Soccer Blanked on Road

ST. LOUIS - - The University of Missouri-St. Louis got a goal in each half to hold off the Truman men's soccer team, as the Bulldogs fell 2-0 to the Tritons on Sunday afternoon.

Match Breakdown:
  • The match was relatively even for the 90 minute duration, with UMSL out-shooting Truman 12-7 overall; however, the shots on goal total was 6-5 in UMSL's favor.
  • Truman had a pair of chances early, as Trevor Kaufmann put a shot over the bar in the third minute before Corey Nolte had his shot saved by the UMSL keeper in the 11th minute.
  • UMSL then put the first goal up in the 26th minute on a goal from just outside of the 18-yard box by Nick Werner.
  • After a brief stretch that earned the Bulldogs three yellow cards, UMSL pushed the pace and forced a save by Bulldog keeper Drew Orf and a subsequent team save by a member of the Bulldog defense. Two follow-up corner kicks by the Tritons resulted in the team's second goal, coming off a header in the 62nd minute by Clay Stocker.
  • Truman then controlled action for the final 20 minutes, as the Bulldogs put three shots on goal – one apiece by Brian Kane, Zach Hollstrom, and Nate Luebbert.
  • Bulldog keeper Orf made three saves on the day, as 18 different Truman players saw field time.
 
Extra Notes:
  • Sunday's match closed a 1-1 opening weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference play for the Bulldogs that began with a 1-0 home win against Maryville on Friday (Sept. 11).
  • Both Nate Luebbert and John Lee have taken a team-high four shots for the Bulldogs this season.
  • Only keeper Drew Orf and defender Zach Hollstrom have played in all 360 minutes of match time this season, although eight of the team's 11 starters have been the same all season.
  • UMSL now owns a 17-16-5 lead in the all-time series that dates back to October of 1980. The Tritons have won the last three matches in the series.
 
What's Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs will return to Kirksville for two more GLVC matches next weekend, beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 18) against Lewis.
