Volleyball Splits with Golden Eagles, Cardinals

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - - The Truman volleyball team picked up a split on the final day of the California (Pa.) Invitational on Saturday, as the Bulldogs took a 3-1 decision against Clarion (Pa.) before falling 3-1 to Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State in the finale.

Truman hit .211 and got a match-best 10 kills from sophomore Jasmine Brown in the four-set opening win against CU, with the Bulldogs winning sets one and two by 25-14 and 25-15 scores. Clarion rebounded to take set three, 25-18, before the Bulldogs put the final squeeze on the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set. Truman had two of its best offensive sets of the season against CU, hitting .273 in the first set and .385 in the second. Abby Heise added nine kills, nine digs, and five blocks, while middle hitters Bailey O'Drobinak and Ali Patterson posted identical five kill, .444 hitting percentage marks offensively. Truman totaled 11 blocks – paced by five from O'Drobinak – while Kayla Bastian took home top digging honors with 17.

In the finale, the Bulldogs faced an undefeated Saginaw Valley squad in a de-facto Classic Championship match, with the GLIAC's Cardinals coming out on top by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-22. Heise again shined with 10 kills, 12 digs and six blocks, while Patterson finished by hitting .290 with 10 kills alongside nine digs and six blocks. Bastian again was Truman's top defender on the back line with 24 digs, posted next to nine kills, while Matti Mason notched a double-double with 34 assists and 12 digs. Claire Wandrey also surpassed the 20-dig mark with 21.

Great Lakes Valley Conference play next awaits the 5-3 Bulldogs, as Truman will face a stout test in Pershing Arena on Friday (Sept. 18) night against McKendree at 7 p.m. The last two meetings between the squads each came in the 2014 postseason, with Truman defeating the Bearcats 3-2 for the GLVC championship before sweeping McKendree in the opening round of the NCAA-II Midwest regional.
