Men's Soccer Bites Lions Early in 3-1 Victory

KIRKSVILLE - - Three first-half goals propelled the Truman men's soccer team to a non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon, as the Bulldogs handed Lindenwood a 3-1 defeat at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Quick Recap:

Match Breakdown:
  • The Bulldogs withstood an early barrage by the Lions, who came out blazing with four shots and five corner kicks in the first 11-plus minutes of the match.
  • However, once Truman settled in, it took no time for the purple and white to find the scoring column, as Craig McLaurine finished a rebounded shot by Trevor Kaufmann to score in the 12th minute of action.
  • Then, less than three minutes later, McLaurine scored again – this time beating the Lindenwood keeper over the top after a long cross by Josh Hall. It was McLaurine's third goal of the season.
  • Lindenwood returned to its initial pressure, getting another pair of corner kicks in the next few minutes before the game settled into more of a midfield approach. Truman made it 3-0 in the 40th minute when Joel Reft played a pass from left to right across the box right to where Jeremy Rehagen could touch it home for his first goal of the season.
  • After the break, the Bulldog defense was stout – keeping Lindenwood out of the net until the 86th minute when the Lions broke the shutout attempt on a goal by Stefan Andric.
  • Jory Knernschield got the start in goal and played all 90 minutes, making seven saves and allowing just the one blemish in the waning minutes.
  • LWU out-shot Truman 23-11, but the Bulldogs put nine of their 11 targets on frame to just nine of 23 for the Lions.

Extra Notes:
  • McLaurine took over the team lead for both goals (3) and points (6) on the season with his two-goal game on Tuesday. It was Hall's second assist and the first assist of the season for both Kaufmann and Reft.
  • Truman continued its strong start to matches this season, having now out-scored its opponents 8-4 in the first 45 minutes of game time.
  • The Bulldogs have been strong at home this season, posting a 3-1 overall record in four total contests, with two more coming this weekend back in GLVC play.
  • Knernschield got his first collegiate start and lowered his season goals-against average to 0.57 in 158 minutes, having now made eight saves at an 88.9 save percentage.
  • Truman cut LWU's all-time lead in the series to 8-4-1 and snapped the one-goal spell that the Lions have held in five of the previous six contests (sixth was a draw).

Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs will open a home weekend against the GLVC's Kansas City schools on Friday at 12 p.m., as Truman welcomes NCAA-II No. 6-ranked Rockhurst to the Bulldog Soccer Park. The Hawks are 6-0-1 (6-0 GLVC) on the season.
