Volleyball Splits 2015 Opening Day

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - - Opening day brought with it a split for the Truman volleyball team on Friday afternoon, as the Bulldogs dispatched the University of Mary (N.D.) 3-1 in the opener before falling 3-0 to No. 13 Central Missouri.
 
The Bulldogs (1-1) went to extra points twice in the first match, with Mary (1-1) taking the season-opening set by a 28-26 score. Truman bounced back with 25-19 and 25-21 victories in sets two and three before overcoming a 23-20 deficit in the fourth to pick up a 27-25 win.
 
In the nightcap, Truman appeared poised to go up 1-0 on the nationally-ranked and tournament-host Jennies (3-0), but UCM turned the tables and scored the final five points of the first set to win, 25-23. Sets two and three all went to the Jennies, as UCM closed out the match with 25-14 and 25-20 decisions.
 
The Bulldogs hit .176 as a team on the day and held its two opponents to just a .153 mark, while Truman also totaled 17 blocks in seven total sets (2.4/set). Sophomore OH Jasmine Brown led the way with 23 kills (3.29/set), while junior Kayla Bastian (16), senior Ali Patterson (14), and senior Abby Heise (11) also reached double-figures in kills.
 
Redshirt freshman setter Matti Mason recorded assist-dig double-doubles in each of her first two collegiate matches, while fellow redshirt freshman libero Claire Wandrey averaged 4.57 digs (32 total) per set to lead the back line. Patterson's seven blocks and Heise's five aces led Truman in the final two primary stat categories.
 
Truman returns to the court twice tomorrow to face Western (Colo.) State (1-2) and St. Cloud (Minn.) State (1-1) to close out the Classic.
