Season Stats

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - -
The Truman men's basketball team endured a 19-point first half – it's lowest 20-minute output of the season – and Southern Indiana capitalized, taking a 13-point lead at the break and holding the 'Dogs at bay with a 81-64 decision at the Physical Activities Center.

The Bulldogs, who moved to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with Saturday's road defeat, took an early 8-2 lead in the first two minutes, as senior Andrew Vander Zwaag hit back-to-back three-pointers before a Kyle Kanaskie lay-up at the 17:58 mark. USI punched back, however, rattling off 14 in a row to build a 16-8 lead with 15:00 left in the opening stanza.

The rest of the half was disjointed for both sides, with the two squads combining for 21 first-half turnovers en route to a 32-19 Screaming Eagles lead at the break. The 19 points for Truman marked the lowest on the year, as a 24-point second-half during a loss to Union (Tenn.) had been the previous low.

The second half much more even with the expected offensive outputs by both squads, as Truman poured in 45 points in the final 20 minutes – including eight three-pointers – against the Screaming Eagles, who improved to 13-3 overall (5-1 GLVC) behind five players in double-figures offensively.

For Truman, Vander Zwaag led all with 17 points behind 6-of-11 from the floor (3-of-7 three-pointers) and a 2-for-3 mark from the line. Kanaskie added 13 points and freshman Jake Velky chipped in a dozen behind a trio of triples. The Bulldogs shot 38% overall from the floor (24-of-64) which included an 11-for-28 (39%) mark from three-point range. Truman hit 5-of-6 free throws but were handled heavily at the line by USI's 14-for-24 mark.

USI, the GLVC's No. 1 rebounding team, lived up to its top billing, out-boarding the 'Dogs 45-30, including 12-8 on the offensive end.

The Bulldogs will return to Kirksville for two games next weekend, beginning on Thursday (Jan. 21) night at 7:30 p.m. against Missouri-St. Louis. The Tritons fell to 6-10 (0-7 GLVC) after a three-point home loss to Lewis on Saturday afternoon.
