Softball Splits Four to Open 2016 Season

2016 Bulldog Schedule

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - - The Truman State University softball team opened its 2016 campaign with a split four-game weekend at the Arkansas-Monticello 8-State Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs picked up wins against former MIAA-rivals Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern (Okla.) State but fell to two programs out of the Great American Conference – Henderson (Ark.) State and Harding.

The Bulldogs (2-2) had their two games on Sunday canceled due to weather, so Truman will hit the road again next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders in Alabama on Friday (Feb. 19) and Sunday (Feb. 21).

Game 1: Henderson State 4, Truman 3 (Box Score)
  • LINEUP NOTES: Senior Kindra Henze got the ball for Truman in the 2016 opener, as she came off a 16-10 season a year ago, with an ERA of 3.03. The Bulldogs started just two starters at their normal positions from the 2015 finale; however, seven of the nine players in the batting order returned from a year ago.
  • TOP 1: Truman scored the first run of the season in the very first at-bat of the season, as freshman OF Christa Reisinger belted a solo shot over the fence for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
  • TOP 2: The Bulldogs took advantage of an HSU error in the top of the second, capitalizing when Riley Cook singled home Kadie Orenstein for a 2-0 lead.
  • BOT 2: HSU, an NCAA Central super-regional team from a year ago, battled back in the bottom of the second with a bases-loaded RBI single and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Score tied, 2-2.
  • TOP 5: Truman perfected a squeeze with Reisinger on third, as sophomore SS Jamie Fowle reached on a fielder's choice bunt to plate the speedy outfielder. Truman on top, 3-2.
  • BOT 6: Henderson drew even again, leading off the home half of the sixth with a solo HR by Alexia Lopez. Score tied, 3-3.
  • BOT 7: After the first two batters were retired, HSU won on a walk-off, as Jordan Griffith took a two-strike pitch over the left field wall for the 4-3 win.
  • STAT NOTES: Truman's four hits came from Reisinger (2) and Cook (2). Reisinger and Orenstein each picked up a stolen base. Henze went 6.2 IP with 7 hits, four runs (all earned), four walks, and nine strikeouts.
  • RECORDS: Truman (0-1), Henderson State (6-2)

Game 2: Truman 10, Neb.-Kearney 2 (5 inn.) (Box Score)
  • LINEUP NOTES: Senior Kelsea Dorsey took the circle for Truman in the nightcap, as she went 17-6 with a 2.39 ERA a season ago.
  • TOP 1: The Bulldogs took the frustration from game one out on UNK from the get-go, pouncing on the Lopers for a seven-spot. Morgan McMahan, Ashley Murphy, Devin Gudehus, Riley Cook, Brooke VunCannon, Christa Reisinger, and Lex Van Nostrand each recorded RBI's in the inning, as Truman sent a dozen hitters to the plate. Truman leads, 7-0.
  • BOT 1: UNK took advantage of a fielding error to score an unearned run off a single into center field. Truman leads, 7-1.
  • TOP 2: Gudehus came through again, this time with two outs to score Cate Simon from first base on a double. Truman leads, 8-1.
  • BOT 4: UNK added a run on a one-out, solo home run by Nicole Larnsen. Truman leads, 8-2.
  • TOP 5: Truman made it an eight-run, run-rule-eligible score with two in the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jamie Fowle reached on an error, allowing VunCannon to score. Then, Simon drew a second HBP on the day, getting an RBI. Truman leads, 10-2.
  • BOT 5: The Bulldog defense wrapped up the victory, getting a putout at the plate off a double for the second out, before Van Nostrand gunned out a runner trying to steal third for the final out.
  • STAT NOTES: VunCannon's two hits led Truman as part of an eight-hit game. The Bulldogs drew eight walks and took two HBP's. Dorsey pitched five innings and struck out five while walking just one.
  • RECORDS: Truman (1-1), Neb.-Kearney (0-1)

Game 3: Truman 2, Northeastern State 1 (Box Score)
  • TOP 3: Northeastern State got on the board first with a one-out solo home run to right field. NSU leads, 1-0.
  • BOT 4: After Cate Simon led off with a double and was lifted for pinch-runner Valerie Schmidt, Morgan McMahan singled to advance Schmidt to third. Pinch-runner Nikki Moss took off for second on the next play and was thrown out, but Schmidt scampered home to even the score. Score tied, 1-1.
  • BOT 6: Jamie Fowle led off the inning with a single, moving to second on a Simon sacrifice bunt. McMahan then delivered once more, singling into center field to score Fowle. Truman leads, 2-1.
  • STAT NOTES: Kelsea Dorsey improved to 2-0, as she sat down the final eight Riverhawks in order to end the game. She struck out eight and allowed just two hits and two walks. McMahan grabbed two of Truman's six base hits.
  • RECORDS: Truman (2-1), Northeastern State (5-2)

Game 4: Harding 7, Truman 2 (Box Score)
  • TOP 1: Truman had to work the long way to plate a single run, as, after 2nd + 3rd w/ nobody out turned into a runner on first with two out, a Cate Simon hit-by-pitch put Lex Van Nostrand on second base. Jamie Fowle then singled her home, giving Truman a 1-0 lead.
  • TOP 3: Truman again put runners on 2nd + 3rd with nobody out; however, this time, Simon brought home one run with an infield groundout. Truman leads, 2-0.
  • BOT 3: After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, HU drew three straight walks to plate a run, before a strikeout and a flyout ended the inning. Truman leads, 2-1.
  • BOT 4: HU got a leadoff home run before two two-RBI singles pushed the margin to four for the Bison. Kelsea Dorsey entered in relief of Kindra Henze and, after a single loaded the bases, got a flyout to end the inning. Harding leads, 6-2.
  • BOT 5: Freshman Lauren Dale took the circle for Truman, and a one-out RBI groundout plated a run for the Bison. Harding leads, 7-2.
  • RECORDS: Truman (2-2), Harding (7-3)
