Softball Posts Fourth Straight Shutout to Close Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Senior Kelsea Dorsey threw a one-hitter and struck out eight, while redshirt senior Cate Simon and freshmen Brooke VunCannon and Christa Reisinger all notched extra-base hits, as the Truman State University softball team capped a perfect weekend with a 4-0 win against Hillsdale (Mich.) College on Sunday afternoon.

Dorsey, who improved to 5-1, was lights-out other than a bunt single with two outs in the third inning, as the senior breezed her way against the Chargers (5-3) to cap the 2016 Music City Invitational. She struck out eight on the afternoon, as the Bulldog pitching staff tossed four shutouts on the weekend while out-scoring its opposition 25-0.

Meanwhile, Truman scored in the bottom of the third, as VunCannon led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a bunt single by Reisinger. Then, during an at-bat by sophomore Riley Cook, the 'Dogs attempted a double delayed steal, as VunCannon snuck home while Reisinger drew a throw to second base.

Then, in the sixth, the Bulldogs finally built some separation, as a leadoff triple by Reisinger paid off immediately when Cook singled her home for a 2-0 lead. After junior Lex Van Nostrand singled and advanced Cook to third, Simon posted an RBI single with one out to plate Cook. Sophomore Ashley Murphy then recorded a sacrifice fly, bringing Van Nostrand home for a 4-0 Truman lead.

Reisinger and Simon had two hits each for the 'Dogs, as Truman improved to 7-5 after the four-game sweep in Nashville. Truman will return to the heartland for doubleheaders on March 7-8 at Central Missouri and Pittsburg (Kan.) State.
