Softball Splits with Southern Indiana on Saturday Afternoon

KIRKSVILLE - - A pair of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's third-place teams battled to a split at the Truman Softball Park on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs and Southern Indiana traded a 1-0 Bulldog win and an 8-3 Screaming Eagle victory.

The Bulldogs, who punched their ticket officially to the GLVC championships with the team's game one win, continue to sit in a three-way tie for third in the league table with both USI and Maryville at 18-6 in league play. Truman is 26-12 overall, while the DH split on Saturday sent USI to 30-14 on the season.

Sophomore Riley Cook led the way with three hits during the two games for Truman, as the Bulldog bats struggled to get going against USI's pitching staff.

The Bulldogs will close the home portion of the 2015 regular season schedule on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Bellarmine (27-21, 16-8 GLVC). Prior to the first pitch, Truman will recognize its six-member senior class, beginning with festivities at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 1, Southern Indiana 0
W: Henze (9-6); 2B: VunCannon (4)
In a tightly-contested pitcher's duel, it was a third inning run scored by Truman that proved the difference-maker. Freshman Brooke VunCannon led off with a double on a 3-2 pitch, before sophomore Riley Cook singled into right field to put runners on first and third. During freshman Christa Reisinger's at-bat, Cook broke for second, drawing a throw all the way through that allowed VunCannon to scamper home and slide in for the go-ahead run.

That would be the only run of the game for either side, as Truman senior Kindra Henze delivered a two-hit, six-strikeout performance to pick up her ninth win of the season. USI left nine runners on base, with both of its hits coming from leadoff batter Caitlyn Bradley.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - Southern Indiana 8, Truman 3
L: Dorsey (13-5)
USI jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, as an RBI single with the bases loaded scored one with just one out. However, the next at-bat lined out to left, where Cook loaded up and cut down a runner at home plate to complete an inning-ending double play.

Trouble would brew in the third, when USI plated three more runs, before the Bulldogs rebounded with a three-spot of their own in the bottom half. After freshman Michaela Mooney, Cook, and Reisinger loaded the bases with one out, sophomore Jamie Fowle singled to score Mooney, before junior Lex Van Nostrand took a pitch in the back for a painful RBI of her own. Senior Cate Simon provided a sacrifice fly to score Reisinger to close the inning's scoring.

USI would go on to score twice in the fifth and seventh, putting the game out of reach for the Bulldogs in the late innings. Cook added two hits, while Reisinger swiped her GLVC-leading 36th base of the year. Senior Kelsea Dorsey was saddled with the loss, starting and pitching 2.2 innings before freshman Lauren Dale allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings of relief work.
