RECAP: Lions Take First Two in Four-Game Series With Truman Baseball

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions picked up a doubleheader sweep over the Truman Baseball team on Saturday. The Lions took the opener 7-1 and the nightcap 15-12. The two teams return to the diamond on Sunday at 1 p.m. for another twinbill.
 
Seth Messey limited the Bulldogs to two hits in picking up a seven-inning complete game over Truman in the opener. The Lions jumped on top with a run in the third and added four in the fourth to chase starter Kent Frantz.
 
Chris Iliopoulos knocked his third home run of the season in the fifth to put Truman on the board. Messey fanned four of the final nine hitters and finished with eight Ks in the game.
 
The bats got rolling in game two as Truman accumulated 13 hits and the Lions 16.
 
Mason King put the Bulldogs on top 1-0 scoring on a single by Charlie Kreh. The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the first.
 
Dave Gambino belted a three-run homer in a four-run second inning to stake the 'Dogs up 5-1.
 
MSSU got a pair back on a home run from Max Hogan in the third and scored four times, all unearned in the fourth. Three runs came on a triple by Hogan.
 
Truman tied the game in the fifth with two unearned runs. Wyatt Fones knotted the game at seven with a single through the left side.
 
Southern jumped back on top with a run in their half of the fifth and Truman tied it again in the sixth on a single by Brendan Trimble.
 
The Lions plated three in the sixth and four in the seventh to go up 15-8.
 
Evan Kayser knocked his first Truman home run in the eighth to score Fones and Kreh doubled in two more to cut the lead down to three at 15-12.
 
The Bulldogs got a leadoff walk to start the ninth but Cody Smith struck out the next two and got Josh Abegg to pop out to second to end the game.
 
Gambino and Kreh both drove in three runs and Kayser added two RBIs. The first four hitters in the Truman line up all had two hits apiece.
 
Rian Markes was the starter for Truman and lasted four innings, allowing seven runs, three earned. Tyler Blackington was tabbed with the loss in relief.
