RECAP: Bulldogs Hold Off Cardinals for First GLVC Win

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Despite scoring three goals in the first half, the Truman State University men's soccer team had to hold off a late charge from William Jewell to capture its first Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) win of 2017, 3-2.

Truman improved to 2-4 overall, including 1-2 in the GLVC, while William Jewell fell to 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in conference action. The Bulldogs now lead the all-time series with the Cardinals 5-2 and have won the last five meetings between the two teams.

Friday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Park, the Purple and White were once again able to spread the wealth as their three goals came from three different players inluding Trevor Kaufmann in the third minute, Michael Ruzicka in the 30th and Jeff Masters in the 44th right before the halftime buzzer. For Kaufmann, that gives him three on the year, while Ruzicka and Masters found the back of the net for the first time in their careers.

Nate Luebbert assisted on Kaufmann's and Koenig was the helper for both the second and third scores, the first two assists of his time in the Purple and White. For Luebbert, he entered the assist column for the fourth time in his career, but the first as a senior.

In goal, Zac Suazo saved three shots to help Truman hang on for the one-score victory.

The team head-to-head was fairly even as the Bulldogs held the advantage in shots (15-10), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (8-2), but the Cardinals had the upper hand in saves (5-3).

Next up, Truman hosts seventh-ranked Rockhurst on Sunday at Bulldog Soccer Park with kickoff set for 12 p.m.
