RECAP: Four Pitchers Combine On Nine-Inning Shutout Of Washburn

Box Score (HTML)

TOPEKA, Kan. – Bryan Clark and three Bulldog relievers struck out nine and shutout the Washburn Ichabods on Sunday 2-0 to split the four-game opening weekend series.

Clark fanned three and allowed three singles in five innings of work then gave way to Matt Tometz in the sixth, Matthew Wade for the seventh and eighth and Peter Young nailed down his second save of the weekend.

It was a pitcher's duel through the first five with Washburn starter Sam Carver matching Clark on the hill. Josh Abegg singled and stole second to lead off the sixth and Brendan Trimble advanced Abegg to third with a single through the left side. Trimble moved up into scoring position with a stolen base and Evan Kayser grounded out to second to bring in Abegg. An error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Ethan Kleinheider allowed Trimble to touch the plate for all the runs Truman would need.

Following a bunt single in the bottom of the sixth, Tometz was called upon and struck out two leaving a runner at second base.

Wade gave up a leadoff double in the seventh but fanned Jake Bublitz. Brady Hoover hit a ball to Jake Goodwin at third, who threw across the diamond to get Hoover. Josh Crosby tried to move up to third but the return throw by Charlie Kreh was on the money and the Bulldogs got out of the inning with the twin killilng.

The Ichabods put runners at second and third with two outs in the eighth but Wade threw a pitch past Bowe Behymer for the big strikeout.

Truman tried to add an insurance run in the ninth when Kleinheider singled and moved up on a sac bunt. Jon Lyons hit a 1-0 pitch to left but Kleinheider was thrown out at the plate.

Young gave up a one out down but then K'ed Bublitz and got Hoover to pop out to short to end the game.

Each team had seven hits with Trimble collecting a pair with a run scored.

Truman will head to Joplin next weekend for a four-game set with Missouri Southern State University.
