KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - On a cold and gloomy afternoon at Bulldog Softball Park, the Truman State University softball team hosted Drury for a weekend doubleheader. The Panthers silenced the Bulldogs in game one for a 3-1 decision before timely hitting led the Purple and White to a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
Truman is now 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC while Drury sits at 9-15 on the season, including 2-8 in league play. Sunday, the Bulldogs hit just .239 (11-of-46) as a team with six of those 11 hits coming from
Jamie Fowle (3-for-4) and
Alyssa Rivera (pictured/3-of-5).
In the first game, Truman's run came in the bottom of the first when
Ashley Murphy scored on a passed ball, but Drury's Kasey Cazares held the Bulldogs in check all game. Cazares gave up just one unearned run on five hits in the complete-game effort with three walks and one strikeout.
Alyssa Hajduk (8-2) took the loss with six walks and six strikeouts while
Nicolette Simpson provided an inning of perfect relief in the seventh.
In the rematch, the visitors got on the board with a run in the first and another in the third before the home team got it going at the plate. In the fourth, Rivera singled in
Brooke VunCannon and
Morgan McMahan doubled in Fowle to knot the score up at 2-2. Two innings later, Rivera laid down perfect suicide squeeze to score
Millie Moyer and Rivera added an insurance run later when she scored during
Michaela Mooney's rundown between first and second.
Lauren Dale (3-5) picked up her second straight complete game and sixth of the season as she gave up two runs, just one earned, on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Through her first six outings of the season, Dale struck out six batters and walked nine of them. In her four appearances since then, the junior hurler as a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 12-to-2.
Next up, Truman will host Missouri S&T for a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 12 p.m.
