KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A split weekend series for Truman Baseball is on tap as the Bulldogs and Quincy Hawks tangle on the diamond. The schedule was adjusted due to weather concerns during the weekend. The series will open with a doubleheader on Friday at noon in Kirksville then shift over to Quincy for a noon twinbill on Saturday.
 
The Bulldogs will need to start their climb up the standings in the GLVC West Division after dropping three of four at Maryville this past weekend. After winning the first game of the series by a 3-2 score with Kent Frantz capturing the Bulldog career pitching wins record, the Saints overpowered Truman 8-3, 10-3, and 11-4 to take the series. Truman is 2-10 in the division and 8-24 overall.
 
Quincy was last year's NCAA Midwest region champion and are sitting at 20-10 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Hawks took three of four from Missouri-St. Louis on the road with a 10-6 win and 10-8 loss on day one and a pair of 8-0 shutouts on day two. They defeated the Lindenwood-Belleville Lynx on Wednesday by a 7-5 score.
 
Last year, the Hawks took all four games against Truman in Quincy. The home team won by scored of 2-1, 14-1, 6-2 and 17-7
 
Format:
Conference series are four games with the first game of the series being a nine-inning game. Games two and three are seven inning games and the fourth game is also a nine-inning affair. The first game of the series serves as a tiebreaker if teams are tied in the conference standings at the end of the season.
 
Truman In GLVC:
The Bulldogs have played 35 GLVC series since joining the league in 2014. They have swept all four games once (vs. Southern Indiana in 2015), won three games six times, split the series 17 times, won just once eight times and lost all four games three times (last vs. Drury 2018).
Truman's longest GLVC winning streak is five games in 2014 and longest GLVC losing streak is six games twice, in 2017 and this season.

Truman individual player stats against Quincy
  • Josh Abegg is 3-for-7 (.429) with a pair of stolen bases.
  • Blake Bagenstos pitched two innings last year and struck out four hitters while not allowing a hit.
  • Bryan Clark got a no decision in working four plus innings in a start. He struck out three and allowed one run on four hits.
  • Kent Frantz has tossed 20 career innings against the Hawks with a 4.05 ERA. He is 1-2 with 11 strikeouts and a Hawk batting average against of .260.
  • Mason King has started seven games. He has five hits and three RBIs in 21 at bats.
  • Charlie Kreh has a home run in two games started and played against Quincy.
  • Jon Lyons has started one of five games played in against Quincy and has two runs scored on one hit in six at bats.
  • Rian Markes took a loss last season after working two and two-thirds against Quincy.
  • Adam Stolley has a pair of hits in seven at bats against QU pitching.
  • Matt Tometz has pitched in three games for a total of six innings. He has faced 30 batters and allowed eight hits and two runs while striking out five.
  • Brendan Trimble has started 10 of 11 games against Quincy. He has 10 hits in 38 at bats (.263) with a home run and four RBIs.
  • Peter Young has thrown three scoreless innings in three appearances. Both hits allowed have been doubles. He has two saves in those three appearances.
 
Scouting the Quincy:
The offensive-minded Hawks have hit 32 home runs this season, six coming from Troy Wehde and hit .277 as a team. They average just over six runs per game with nine hits a contest. Brynn Martinez and Cody Birdsong are among the team leaders in average at .339 each. Martinez is the table setter with 30 runs scored and 15 stolen bases out of 17 attempts. Birdsong has eight doubles and 20 RBIs.

The pitching staff has a stout 3.44 ERA and an opponent batting average of .246. Nick Stroud is 4-3 in eight starts this year and a 2.68 ERA. Jimmy McDonald has the most innings pitched with 39 and a 3.86 ERA. Cole Crawford has six saves out of the pen and is 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 13 appearances.
 
Bulldog Leaders:
Charlie Kreh is the team's top offensive player with a .345 batting average. Kreh has 40 hits, five doubles, three home runs and has driven in 22 runs.

As a team, Truman averages 4.3 runs per game with a team batting average of .234.

Kreh is hitting .341 in GLVC games with one home run and 11 RBIs.
 
The Starting Rota:
Bryan Clark, Kent Frantz and Rian Markes all have eight starts apiece through the first eight weekends.

???????Frantz, in his three GLVC starts, is 2-1 with two complete games and a 1.64 ERA. He has allowed four runs in 22 innings of work.
Clark has dropped all three of his conference starts and is 2-5 this season. He is second on the team in innings pitched with 40.1 and in strikeouts with 25.
Markes is 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference. He has a 5.02 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched.

Blake Bagenstos (6), Matthew Wade (1) and Josh Woodmansee (1) have made the starts in the other games this year. Bagenstos is 1-3, Wade started his first collegiate game last week at Maryville and is second on the team in appearances with 13 and Woodmansee is 0-1 in eight appearances.
 
Shutting Things Down:
Closer Peter Young has four saves this season and 25 for his Bulldog career. Young was a first-team all-GLVC pitcher in 2017 and is the only Bulldog pitcher with more than 10 career saves.
Matt Tometz has the most relief appearances for the Bulldogs at 14 and is 0-2 with a 4.30 ERA. Tometz has five pickoffs this season.
 
Countdown to 200:
Head Coach Dan Davis needs eight wins to hit the 200-win plateau. He will be only the second Truman Baseball Coach to win 200 games joining all-time leader in wins Sam Nugent (238).
 
Bulldog Bites:
  • Truman is averaging 4.3 runs per game this season and 7.2 hits per game. Opponents are averaging 7.1 runs per game and 9.9 hits.
  • Brendan Trimble is the active leader in multi-hit games with 48, Charlie Kreh is second with 33 and Mason King at 20.
  • Young's 1.74 career ERA would rank third on the Bulldog career pitching list with those with a minimum of 25 innings pitched. His 24 career saves is first by 15 over Dan Hillen (2003-05) and his 66 appearances is the all time leader among all Truman pitchers.
  • Frantz is first in career wins with 17. He is second in starts with 36, seventh in complete games with 12 and second in innings pitched with 245.1. He is tied four fourth in strikeouts with 149 with Dave Wehrmeister. The record is 174 set by Brant Kraner.
  • Truman has 40 multi-run innings this season and have scored in the first inning 13 times in 32 games. Opponents have 58 multi-run innings and have scored in the first inning in 18 of 32 games played.
Up Next:
Truman returns home for a four-game series against the University of Missouri-St. Louis next weekend. Games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Truman Baseball Park.
