RECAP: UMSL Rallies To Stun 'Dogs In Game 1, Takes Game 2 For Series Split

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis Tritons turned the tables on the Truman Bulldogs and rallied from five runs down in the opener to win 11-9 in extra innings then held on for a 7-5 victory in the nightcap to split the four-game conference series.
 
Doubleheader/Series Highlights:
  • Truman's Charlie Kreh hit .500 for the series (8-of-16) with three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs. He drove in five on Sunday, including four in the opener to move into the single-season top 10 in runs batted in with 40 (sixth single season).
  • Ethan Kleinheider and Brian Edell also hit .500 for Sunday. Kleinheider was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and Edell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
  • Evan Kayser had a pair of home runs, in consecutive at bats and had three round trippers this weekend to go with seven RBIs.
  • The Bulldogs hit .371 as a team with eight home runs and seven doubles.
  • Tom DeCero had the bat for the Tritons over the four games. DeCero hit .500 (8-of-16) with four runs scored and four RBIs. He was 5-of-8 on Sunday.
 
Game 1 Box Score
  • The Tritons scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The first two runs came on a two-out, two-run single by Brian Seymour that went off the glove on a diving attempt by right fielder Noah Schrader.
  • Charlie Kreh hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1 UMSL.
  • Starter Matt Wade found his groove and shutdown the Tritonsin the second, third and fourth innings and had three strikeouts facing one over the minimum in that span.
  • The Bulldogs had a big third inning to take the lead. Truman had six hits including a line painting double by Kreh and a two-run two-out single by Brian Edell to give Truman a 6-3 lead.
  • In the fourth, Mason King laced a triple to center scoring Schrader from first and Kreh picked up his third RBI of the game on a sac fly to make it 8-3.
  • The Tritons got an unearned run in the fifth to cut the lead in half.
  • Kreh singled in Ethan Kleinheider for an insurance run in the sixth for his fourth RBI of the game.
  • Wade was lifted after six and reliever Ben Fugitt started the seventh by allowing three straight singles and two walks.
  • Matt Tometz came in and got the first out on a sac fly to center to cut the lead to 9-7.
  • Pinch hitter Keaton King lined a two-out, game tying single over the outstretched glove of Kayser at short.
  • In the ninth, Xavier Collier knocked his first home run of the season over the right field fence with two-outs and a runner on to give UMSL the 11-9 lead and subsequent victory.
  • Tometz took the loss to fall to 0-3 while UMSL's Kevin Smith pitched the final six innings in relief to get the win. Smith struck out eight and allowed two hits.
 
Game 2 Box Score
  • The Tritons scored their first five runs of the game, one in the first and four in the third all with two outs.
  • UMSL had three straight hits, all after the first two outs were recorded in the first with Brian Seymour getting the RBI single.
  • An RBI double that bounced off the glove of a diving Brendan Kelly in left allowed two runs to score and made it 3-0. Derrick Freeman added an RBI double and Jack Morsch and RBI single to stake the Tritons to the 5-0 lead.
  • Evan Kayser hit his fifth home run of the season and second of the series with two outs in the bottom of the fourth for Truman's first run.
  • The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth and Kreh was up with a chance to tie the game but was called out on a check swing strike three.
  • Tom DeCero picked up his third hit of the game, a solo home run, to get the run back in the sixth.
  • Kayser belted his second home run in as many at bats, a two-run shot, to trim the lead to 6-3.
  • The Bulldogs put two more runners on in the inning and pinch hitter Zach Spencer hit the top of the left center field fence with a pitch that scored Ethan Kleinheider but Jon Lyons was cut down at the plate trying to score from first on a well-executed 8-6-2 play.
  • A final two-out RBI single by Cooper Vinz in the seventh made it 7-4 UMSL.
  • Kreh was hit his fifth home run of the year and second for the series in the bottom of the seventh to cut the gap to the eventual final score of 7-5.
  • Bryan Clark was tagged with the loss after two-plus innings of work. He allowed eight hits and five runs.
  • Jim Brandt got the win to improve to 4-2 on the year with 5.1 innings pitched and eight hits allowed. Alex Oltmann struck out two in the seventh to earn his second save.

Truman will play their final road series of the season at Rockhurst University next Saturday and Sunday.
