RECAP: Offense Stymied In Doubleheader Sweep By Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Bulldog Baseball team had their offense kept in check as Rockhurst swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. Truman was shutout 4-0 in game won and the Hawks rallied for a 3-2 win in an extra inning in game two.

Doubleheader Notes:
  • Charlie Kreh had three hits in game one and two in game two to extend his hitting streak out to 17 straight games. That is now the second longest since 2004 after passing Corbin Williams' 16 in 2014.
  • Kreh was 5-for-8 (.625) with a double and RBI in the doubleheader.
  • The rest of the Bulldogs were 7-of-51 (.137).
  • The Hawks hit .344 as a team with four doubles and seven RBIs. Jeremy Lufft and Nic Mertes were each 4-of-7.
  • It was the second time this season the Bulldogs have been shutout in a game.

Game 1 Box Score
  • Both starting pitchers were locked in a duel through the first four innings. Kent Frantz allowed two singles and a walk and Jack Eisnebarger allowed only three singles through five innings.
  • Three straight hits to being the fifth by Rockhurst turned into three runs. Nic Mertes Jeremy Lufft and Cameron Dean all singled to load the bases.
  • Leadoff hitter Tommy Kraus brought in the first run on a single to left center and Henry Weiler brought in two more with a two-out hit up the middle.
  • Brendan Kelly was stranded at third following a leadoff single to right center in the sixth.
  • An infield single by Lufft added an insurance run for Rockhurst in their half of the sixth.
  • Charlie Kreh hit a one-out double in the ninth for his third hit of the game but was left at third base.
  • Eisenbarger struck out seven and walked one in pitching the complete-game shutout.
  • Frantz fanned three and walked one in seven innings of work.
Game 2 Box Score
  • Rockhurst struck first on a two-out single to center following a double by Alex Van Pelt in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The Bulldogs scored both of their runs in the top of the sixth, all with two outs. Charlie Kreh had an RBI single to left that scored Noah Schrader and Brendan Trimble walked on a 3-2 pitch that got away from the catcher, allowing Mason King to score.
  • Nic Mertes singled to left center to greet reliever Matt Tometz in the bottom of the seventh.
  • A wild pitch moved pinch runner Jack Burns into scoring position and he would score the tying run on a double down the left field line by Cameron Dean.
  • Tometz got the final two outs to strand the winning run at second.
  • Mason King drew a four-pitch walk with two outs in the eighth and went to third on a single by Kreh to right field.
  • Trimble grounded out on the first pitch by reliever Grant Ruediger to leave runners at the corners.
  • The Bulldogs turned a double play in their half of the eighth but Van Pelt delivered a double to right center. An error at short compounded problems putting the winning run at third.
  • Tyler Edwards singled through the right side on a 3-2 pitch to score Van Pelt and walk off with the win.
  • Kreh and Kleinheider each had two hits for Truman.
  • Rian Markes got a no decision after tossing six innings and allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts.
