RECAP: Truman Sweeps Southern Indiana for First Time Since 2014

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University softball team pushed its winning streak to six on Saturday afternoon on a cold, but sunny day at Truman Softball Park. The Bulldogs scored five runs in both games of the sweep and won with scores of 5-3 and 5-1.

Truman improved to 19-11 overall and 8-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) while Southern Indiana fell to 17-16 on the season, including 6-8 in league play. Saturday, Christa Reisinger was the lone Bulldog with multiple hits as she went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, four RBI, seven total bases, one walk, a hit-by-pitch, one stolen base, and her team-leading fifth home run of the season.

In game one, Truman scored three runs before Southern Indiana was able to get on the board. In the first, Jamie Fowle singled home two runs with a seeing-eye bunt that found space on the right side of the infield and Ashley Murphy drew a bases-loaded walk in the second.

The Screaming Eagles cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with a solo shot in the third before Reisinger brought in a pair with a single to second base in the home half of that inning that made it 5-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Southern Indiana's two-run home run to center made it 5-3, but Lauren Dale retired the next two batters to seal the victory.

Dale (8-6) went the distance for the 10th time this year while giving up three earned runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout. Since falling to 1-5 on March 18, the right-handed hurler has gone 7-1 in her last eight outings.

In the nightcap, Southern Indiana's only run of the contest came with a solo bomb in the third, but Truman had plenty of offense to combat it. Murphy hit an RBI groundout in the first, Reisinger had a two-run home run in the third, Alyssa Rivera scored on an error in the third, and Brooke VunCannon singled in Murphy in the third.

Making her first start since March 26 vs. Missouri S&T and just her fifth start of the season, Nicolette Simpson (2-2) was brilliant in the circle with her second complete game of the spring. Simpson surrendered just one earned run on five hits with two punchouts and two free passes.

During the six-game winning streak, Truman pitchers have an ERA of just 1.59 in 44 innings pitched with 25 strikeouts, 16 walks and an opponent batting average of only .209. The Bulldogs continue to hold steady at second in the league in ERA with a mark of 2.70 right behind McKendree's 2.63.

Next up, Truman will host those Bearcats on Monday with first pitch in game one set for 12 p.m.
