KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Soccer team got its biggest win of the season Sunday as they erupted for five goals against Southwest Baptist. Andrew Brennan got his first multi-goal game of his career and Mac Knudsen and Adam Shine scored their first career goals in the victory. Keeper Julian Echeverri got his first Truman win against the Bearcats and his first career shutout in the draw with Drury last weekend.
Eight players have scored at least one goal for the Bulldogs this season: Brennan (3), Matt Yankowitz (team leader with five), Jeff Masters (2), Jake Koenig, Mateo Montano, Collin McDonough, Knudsen and Shine. The team has already surpassed their win total from last season with five wins, and with four conference wins have doubled their conference wins from 2018.
The Miners are 4-5-2 on the season, 3-4-2 in GLVC play. They are led by Bertram Gjelfort who has five goals on the season. Shane Cairns, Jason Jorgensen and Paal Benum all have two goals. Goaltender Nick Posey has made 27 saves this season and kept two teams off the scoreboard. The Miners defeated Missouri-St. Louis 4-3 in 2OT Sunday after UMSL stunned then undefeated Maryville. Before that victory the Miners had been winless in four matches, drawing against Lewis and William Jewell and losing to Rockhurst and Lindenwood.
Maryville rose up to number two in the national poll, but a weekend that saw them fall 1-0 to Missouri-St. Louis and 4-2 against Lindenwood knocked the Saints all the way to 25. They are led by Braden Johnson, who has nine goals; tied for most in the conference. Mirza Hasecic is second on the team with five goals, one of many tied for seventh in the GLVC. He and Rasmus Tauts co-lead the team with four assists. They have limited opponents to just eight goals this season, and shut out six straight opponents between 9/20 and 10/6.
These two matches will be the team's last road matches of the season—they will come home for back to back weekends to take on Southern Indiana/McKendree and UMSL/Lindenwood on the final weekend of the season. All games will be at Truman Soccer Park at noon.
