PDF Notes | Live Stats | Live Video | Listen Live

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Football team will be in Liberty, Missouri on Saturday to face William Jewell College in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game. The Bulldogs enter with a 6-1 overall record and 3-1 in conference while the Cardinals are 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the GLVC.

From agony to victory, the cardiac Bulldogs pulled out a 41-39 homecoming thriller on Saturday after nearly dropping their second straight 10-point fourth quarter lead. Josh Scheiderer kicked a 28-yard field goal with seven seconds left after Truman surrendered a 38-25 lead with 2:30 left to play. Jaden Barr engineered a 13-play, 64-yard drive in the final two minutes to set up the winning field goal. Barr had a huge offensive day with 272 yards passing, three touchdowns and his own 69-yard touchdown run. Spencer Newell became the first 100-yard receiving Bulldog for the season with eight catches for 101 yards and two scores. The Truman defense did their part as Sam Reeves picked up two of the four quarterback sacks and 10 total tackles for loss.

The Cardinals have dropped six straight heading into Saturday's battle with Truman. The most recent setback was a 42-12 home loss to McKendree. Jewell allowed three touchdown plays of over 25 yards, including a 68-yard pass and a 74-yard punt return to McKendree's Matt Cole. QB Will Schneider threw for 237 yards and was the leading rusher with 85. Jalik Jaggwe caught four passes for 118 yards.

Truman/William Jewell Series Notes:
This will be the seventh game played between the two schools under the GLVC banner with Truman winning five of the previous six games. The only Cardinal win came in 2014 when they spoiled the Bulldogs homecoming with a second half comeback and 21-17 win.

Prior to 2013, the teams played 13 times, mainly between 1904-1923 with the Cardinals holding the upper hand. Jewell won seven games, Truman won four and there were two ties.

The two teams share some "scorigami" final scores. Each school won a game 5-0, Jewell in 1904 and Truman in 1908. The Cardinals have a 1-0 win based on a forfeit at the end of the 1909 season. "Scorigami" is defined as game with a final score that is extremely and hard to come by.

Last year in Kirksville, Andy Satulla scored with 27 seconds left to break a 20-20 tie and give Truman their fourth straight win in the series. Satulla and Jaden Barr each ran for over 100 yards for Truman while Will Schneider led the Cardinals with 242 yards passing and 89 yards rushing.
Bulldogs Back Getting Votes:
For the fifth week out of seven polls, Truman is back to receiving votes in the AFCA Division II Coaches poll. The Bulldogs picked up five votes after dropping off the poll following a #24 ranking and suffering their only loss to Lindenwood in week six.

Truman is in the top 10 nationally in three stat categories. The Bulldogs are fourth in kickoff returns at 29.7 yards per, fifth in sacks allowed with four through six games and seventh in opponent third downs at 26%.

In addition to leading the conference in those categories, Truman is also first in the GLVC in passing defense (210.9/g), pass efficiency defense (108.03) and net punting (37.3). They are second in the GLVC in eight other statistical rankings.

A Look Around The Region:
Truman is a member of the NCAA Super Region 3, comprised of the GLVC, MIAA, GAC and GLIAC conferences. The Bulldogs are one of 10 teams with one loss or fewer entering week seven.

Ferris State (GLIAC), Central Missouri (MIAA), Ouachita Baptist (GAC) and UINDY (GLVC) are the four undefeated teams in the region while Northwest Missouri, Harding, Henderson State, Southern Arkansas, Grand Valley St. and Truman have one-loss.

The first regional ranking by the NCAA will be released on Monday, October 28. Eight teams from the region will make the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Post Game Notes Against Missouri S&T:
  • It was the first time since 2001 that the Bulldogs won a game with their last offensive snap in regulation being a field goal attempt. The last time was against Washburn in October 2001 when Austin Lepper kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Ichabods 27-26 in Topeka.
  • Jaden Barr used seven different receivers and completed 26 passes for the second straight week. Spencer Newell earned his first 100-yard receiving game and first by a Bulldog in 27 games. The last was Jordan Jorgensen against Morningside (Iowa) in 2017.
  • Barr added 107 yards rushing bolstered by his 69-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to finish with 379 yards of total offense. He became only the second Bulldog, joining Matt Ticich and Eric Howe to hit 8,000 yards of total offense and 6,000 passing yards.
  • More Barr…his four touchdowns responsible for on Saturday moved him to within five of the Truman record held by Ticich of 78. He will next tie Jarrett Anderson with 74 on his next one.
  • Jake Ellis moved into a career top 10 by catching a nine-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Ellis tied Mike Berentes for ninth in career TD receptions with his 15th.
  • Sam Reeves reclaimed the top spot nationally in career sacks and tackles for loss on Saturday. Reeves was credited with two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss Saturday to jump back to first in Division II career rankings. He now has 35.5 sacks and 52.5 tackles for loss.
  • The Bulldogs had 10 accepted penalties against, second time this season with 10 or more fouls. Truman had four fouls on special teams, including three that negated lengthy kick returns, four on defense, one negating a fumble recovery and two on offense, one taking off a 24-yard completed pass. Truman lost officially 96 yards to penalties while Missouri S&T was touched five times for 60 yards.
  • Each team was a perfect 4-for-4 in redzone scoring and Truman won the third down battle at 9-of-14 compared to S&T's 6-of-15 success rate.
  • The 2:23 Truman trailed in the fourth quarter was the longest they have trailed in a game this season. The previous mark was six seconds against Lindenwood the week before.

Behind Enemy Lines…
  • The Cardinals are last in the GLVC in scoring offense (19.9 ppg) and scoring defense (37.1 ppg).
  • They are eighth (last) in total offense at 370 yards per game with 126 on the ground and 243 through the air.
  • Defensively they are seventh in the conference at 445 yards allowed. They give up 196 rushing and 249 passing.
  • Jewell is also last in kickoff returns (12.4/return), punting (24.3) and allowing opponents a 50% success rate on third downs.
  • Quarterback Will Schneider is fourth in the GLVC passing at 232.9 per game and receiver Jalik Jaggwe is third in the conference in receiving yards per ame with 86. Schneider is second in total offense per game, accounting for 273.4 per contest.
  • Brock Geisz averages 9.6 tackles per game to be among the league-leaders at third.
  • The Cardinals are 5-33 dating back to the start of the 2016 season.

Up Next:
Truman returns home for the final time in 2019 when they host McKendree for Senior day at noon. The Bulldogs won an "action-packed" 45-38 battle in Lebanon last season.
