KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Basketball team is riding a four game winning streak as they head into the holiday season. Their final game of the 2019 calendar year will be in Maryville against the reigning DII champions and current second ranked team in the nation—NW Missouri State.
Brodric Thomas entered the season with a career total of 834 points. He crossed the thousand point threshold on November 30th in the win over Washburn, becoming the 30th Bulldog to reach 1,000 career points. Following the victory over Quincy on December 3rd, he has 1,029 career points—which puts him 28th on the all-time leaderboard. He sits 20 points behind Lou Gregory in 27th, who scored 1,049 points from 1969-73.
Thomas' pace so far this season is putting him in historic territory. If he keeps up his current scoring average of 24.4 points per game, it would be the second highest single season mark in program history—behind Steve Liford's 25.9 points per game in the 1987-88 season. He would finish with 683 points for the season, which would break the single season record of 623 points in a season set by Seth Jackson in 2014-15.
Thomas has made his presence felt on the national leaderboard as well. At 24.4 ppg he ranks tenth in the country as of 12/17, and is holding steady at second in the GLVC behind TJ Crockett of Lindenwood. Turner Scott continues to be crucial on both ends of the floor, as he is top ten in the GLVC in both assists (6th in the conference with 4.75 per game) and steals (9th in the conference with 1.75 per game).
Alex McQuinn set career highs against Quincy in points with 12 and in rebounds with eight. Sam Nissen also set personal bests against the Hawks with six points and four assists.
The Opponent:
NW Missouri State won 46 consecutive games between March 10, 2018 when they fell to Minnesota State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and December 7 when their streak was broken by a loss to Central Missouri.
The Bearcats are led by Ryan Hawkins, who is averaging 24.2 points per game—which is 12th in the nation. He crossed the 40 point threshold twice this season with 44 against Southern Nazarene and 43 at Lincoln (MO).
Trevor Hudgins leads the team in assists with 7.3 per game. He also averaged 15.6 points per game, one of three Bearcats averaging double figures with Hawkins and Diego Bernard (16.6 ppg).
Up Next:
The Bulldogs will resume GLVC play at the turn of the calendar as they head to William Jewell on January 2nd and then take on Rockhurst in Kansas City on the 4th.
