RECAP: Baseball Picks Up Win Over Nationally-Ranked Illinois Springfield

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Truman Baseball team broke through for a dramatic win number one on the season with an 11-10 upset over #3 Illinois Springfield in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Sunday. The Prairie Stars bounced back with a 20-1 win in game two to force the rubber game tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Game 1 Recap
Reid Wilson's two-out single to left scored Mason King and the Bulldog Baseball team picked up an 11-10 walk-off win over #3 Illinois Springfield in the series opener. Wilson's heroics came after the Bulldogs trailed 6-0 after an inning and a half.

Truman was the home team since the series was originally moved from Kirksville to Springfield due to weather and field conditions. The Prairie Stars scored a run in the first and five in the second to jump out to the lead.

The Bulldogs responded with five of their own in the bottom of the second.  King drew a two-out, bases loaded walk after being down in the count 2-2. Wilson drove in two with a single to center and Evan Kayser drove in a pair on a double.

UIS tacked on three more runs in the third to go up 9-5.

Truman chipped away with two in the fourth with Adam Stolley tripling and King doubling to center. King would score on a double steal attempt with Steven Bradbury getting into a rundown allowing him to cross before the final out.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the sixth. Kayser struck out for what should have been the third out but reached on the wild pitch. Bradbury singled to left and Brian Edell followed with an RBI base hit. With the bases loaded, Ethan Kleinheider walked on  a full count to tie the game at nine.

Stolley doubled to lead off the seventh and would score to put Truman ahead on a sac fly from Wilson.

Caleb Buehrle was working his fourth inning in relief and retired the first hitter in the ninth before pinch hitter Ben Schanding tied the game with a solo home run.

Stolley reached via being hit by a pitch with one-out in the Bulldog ninth but was picked off. King fouled off two pitches before drawing a huge walk. Wilson then singled to left center and the cutoff throw was bobbled by the shortstop allowing King to round third and score the winner.

Edell was 3-for-4 and Stolley was 2-for-3, with three runs scored.

Buehrle picks up his first Truman win in relief and struck out two, walking one. Rian Markes was the starter and allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits.

Game 2 Recap
In game two, UIS once again raced out to a big lead that Truman could not overcome. The Prairie Stars scored five times in the first and two in the second to take a 7-0 lead. They would add five more in the fourth before Truman got its lone on an RBI single by Holden Missey.

UIS recorded 19 hits and scored runs in all but the third inning to roll to the run-rule victory. Zach Speaker was 4-for-6 with three home runs and eight RBIs. Brandon Bannon drove in six runs on three hits.

Mason King had two of Truman's four hits and Connor McKenna was the losing pitcher going three innings.
